Owls

Hi all. A nice surprise today a pair of owls! I have wanted a pair for some time but they're never available. This week I saw an ad for some young Owls at a good price. I decided to go check it out. The breeder it had quite a collection of Gould's, Diamonds, and owls just to name a few. He was an old timer that has been breeding finches for most of his life and seem to really know his stuff. I felt lucky to have somebody that would work with me in finding a true pair. So I bought what he assumes are a male-female pair. He reassured me that if I find it is not a true pair he will be glad to switch later on. Really looking forward to getting to know this species after reading so much about them. They've been home now for a couple hours and are already checking out their cage. After a couple of days when they settle in I will be posting pictures. The only thing better than getting a new finches is to get a species you've never had before. LOL.

Very lucky that you found what you wanted, and are able to exchange them if they're not a pair. You can learn a lot from someone who has raised them for a long time too. Love to see pictures, and good luck raising them.

They are gorgeous! Congratulations Kyle!!!

Just a couple of weeks ago, I visited the Pet Shop, and came home with a singleton Owl companion for my lonesome Owl girl (one of my chicks, that was raised by my Stars).

He had been a return, and about a year old, so I was offered him for a fraction of the usual going price. What's even better, I ended up getting him for free (because I had enough points for my discount).

I really like my Owls, they are such darling little birds.

I just know you're going to love them.

lovezebs hi Elana. :D I was thrilled to get this pair! I had fully expected that they would have one breeding pair and they would all be siblings and I would only be coming home with one. As owls are so hard to sex I think it could be quite a project to get an unrelated pair. Time will tell for sure but I think they are a male-female pair. He even has them banded so that visually I can tell who's who. They are in their own cage 26w × 36h at the moment. The cage is certainly not long enough so I'll be looking for another flight cage. They are only 4 months old and have a great appetite they clean their dishes up! Its to the point that now I'm known as "guy with the birds" in my apartment building. LOL.
You really lucked out with your owl acquisition and the price was right! I thought I did pretty well price wise as he was asking for $55 a bird. You're all girl must have been very excited. Where they instantly friends? So nice when they have their own kind with them. :-)

I have to say, that $55.00 for an Owl, is an excellent price. Pet Shop sell them for something like $109.00 per bird. In Petland, they are something like $ 180.00 per bird or more.

As to this little fella, seeing as he'd been in quaranteen in the Pet Shop for quite sometime, I felt comfortable adding him to my flight fairly quickly.

All four Owls (parents, daughter, and Newbie), are hanging out together, so he seems to have been adopted into the family :D

They are good eaters, you're right.
My guys enjoy my eggfood mixture and greens, and love spray millet. They will also snap up mealworms (yummm...).

So Jelly! They are beautiful birds Kyle!!! they are my next finch... someday when i find a breeder, or get to a local bird show early enough!! My breeder bought her owls at the bird show (she got there early as she had her own table to set up) and snatched them up) just waiting for them to cooperate and give her some young!!!

Fantastic news! =D> And congrats on finding a good breeder to help.....and to have a selection of other finches as well to be tempted by.

Sounds like you may be back for a wee bit more bird shopping. :YMDEVIL:

He wouldn't happen to be an older gent (in his seventies) from Chechoslovakia, would he?

lovezebs that sounds about right I'm not sure where he's from. I got the impression he could be Amish or something. LOL. His name was Jacob.

Probably not be the chap I'm thinking of.
For the life of me can't think of his name, but it was not Jacob.

There was a fellow here in Calgary some years back, visiting his daughter. He'd brought some birds with him, and I ended up buying some from him at the time, that's why I asked.

How are the new kids doing?
