You refer to Sporophila Angolensis?

If so, sexes are quite different:

Male:

Female:

That's true, the best way to be sure is by buying an already mature bird.

But if it is a male, within 3 - 5 months it would start practicing his singing, once only males sing.

It would help using a record to both, teach and encourage the bird to sing, if you don't have an already adult male available to play this role.

Can you provide us some pictures?

I have a friend of mine who used to breed this birds, he may know if it is a male or a female only by the looking.

Ha, I tried to listen to the Sporophila angolensis singing, and my male Canary instantly chimed in and I couldn't separate the sounds. I'll listen in another room.

This seems a very interesting bird to me, and I've not seen any in the U.S.

Here in Brazil we can find them in the wild, they are very popular birds due to his magnificent song.

Ricardo Ronsini

Why so expensive, if they are native to the area?
