A Rather Suprising Development...

Post by lovezebs » Fri Apr 21, 2017 8:33 am

Hello All Fellow Finchers,

The last little while, I have tried something completely new and different.

I bought some organic black soil, put some of it into 8x8 tin foil pans, scattered bird seeds on top, and sprayed them several times a day, then covered the trays loosely with plastic wrap into which I poked little holes...

In what seemed like no time, I had seeds sprouting everywhere, then growing into a variety of lush green sprouts, which I then placed in the sun.

When they reached an inch to an inch and a half tall, I popped them into the flights, trays, soil, sprouts and all.

Well, all of my birds went wild all over them. It was like having a herd of tiny goats in there.

Then I noticed something odd in the Waxbill's flight.
While the other birds consumed the greens, and sprouting seeds with relish, the Waxbills seemed to take it a step further.

Slowly the soil itself appeared to be disappearing from the tray.

At first I put it down to them scattering the soil around the tray or around the flight, but saw very little evidence of this.

Finally it struck me, that they must be eating some of the soil

Now, please let me reassure everyone, that my birds have plenty of food and then some at all times.

So what is it in the soil that they are finding so appealing and which by the way appears to be agreeing with them???

Any thoughts???

Weird! In the human world one would be worried that there is a mineral deficiency like iron

My society finches have always liked to eat bits of potting mix from my indoor plants. I figured it was like grit.

Whenever I have too many weeds in my yard (usually grasses or sow thistle plants), I pull some and put them in my aviary, roots and all. My birds have always eaten bits and pieces of the soil as well. I never worried about it because a) we've been in this house for 31 years now and I don't use pesticides in those areas and b) lots of friends in Germany have open ground aviaries and their birds have always consumed some of the soil with no ill effects. You couldn't stop them if you tried but of course in those aviaries hygiene is of utmost importance (and some of the soil gets replaced on a regular basis).
There has to be some benefit and I would be happy, Elana, that your birds are still following their instincts.

GouldianGuy Sheather isobea

Thanks folks,

I wasn't really all that worried, seeing as I have seen no ill effects whatsoever.

It was more of a curiousity thing, rather than a worry.

I found myself thinking as well that they are lacking something , which they are finding in the soil, and it would be interesting to know what it is. They are following their instincts obviously.

It's curious though, that I am seeing this behavior only in the Waxbill flight, not in the other flights.

Something that I had noticed, is that my Strawberry male, is starting to colour up into a nice rich colour, and I wonder if this has something to do with it (?)

I would agree with Sheather that it's acting as a grit for them. But hey, maybe they just like the taste!

There are also all kinds of beneficial micro organisms in soil.

My parrot finches do the same thing. I usually pull the pot out, add more soil and replant, but I'm thinking now maybe I'll just leave the pot in there. Your strawberry has gorgeous, vibrant color.

Celeris isobea ann

Thanks for the input folks.

Ann, I'm glad to hear that you and other people have come up with the same idea of adding a planted pot or tray into the birdies environment. I had considered it for a long time, but was always worried about somehow introducing contaminants.

Yes, I suppose there are all sorts of micro organisms in soil, Iso, and Celeris, maybe they do simply like how it tastes ( :YMSICK:) .

I guess birds who are in outdoor aviaries, are exposed to soil on a regular basis (as are birds in the wild of course) and come to no harm from it.

Whatever it is, I'm glad that I finally decided to take the plunge and introduce some more natural elements and enrich their environment and their experience.

If you are concerned about the soil intake, one could grow plants in pots through hardware cloth to prevent them from eating the soil

I would make sure I'm using an organic soil mix if your birds are eating it, for whatever reason. There are chemical additives in most non-organic potting mixes. Just to be on the safe side ... peat moss, for example, which makes up the bulk of most potting mixes, is treated with wetting agents. Same for coir if that is in your potting mix. Then there are fertilizers, and sometimes those "moisture retention" additives that look like tiny round balls when they're plumped up with water.

I have been considering trying to grow wheat grass in a small shallow container for my guys ever since I got them, but when I bought some from the grocery they wouldn't go near it. But I may try it anyway, eventually.

I did buy some sunflower seed to plant out. My wild finches love the leaves, it'd be interesting to see if my caged guys go for it. Plus my parakeets' favorite perch was a sunflower stem - until it finally broke. I should grow some more for them, LOL!

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.
