The Great Midnight Escape And Other Adventures....

Post by lovezebs » Tue May 16, 2017 3:43 am

Hello Fellow Finchers

It is 1:25 am, and scratched, bruised and aching all over, I am rolling into bed.

This is not the first time that I've rolled into my bed tonight, it is in fact the third time...

The first time was rather uneventful all things considering. A bit of reading, setting the alarm, punching the pillows a few times, and lights out.

Laying peacefully in that in between state between wakefullness and sleep, I thought I heard wings fluttering somewhere, but I figured that it was just someone settling in for the night .

More fluttering...

"Oh go to sleep." I muttered crossly, punching the pillow again... and then I saw it out of the corner of my eye, against the hazy golden glow of the night light....

...to be continued tomorrow.... too tired tonight....

....a tiny UFO went by the far wall, heading in the direction of the windows.

Laying there motionless, I strained my eyes against the darkness, blinking furiously to clear my night vision.

What on earth was that? my tired mind raced wildly in all directions... did a sparrow or a bat somehow invade my home?

The small UFO, was on the move again, accompanied by the sound of fluttering wings.

Snap, I hit the bedside light switch, only to see a tiny white Zebra finch fly by drunkenly to the window frame and cling desperately to the upper ledge.

Shooting out of bed, I forgot about my bad knee, almost doing a face plant onto the floor. Thank goodness there was a big dog in my way, sitting up with a worried look on his smooshy face, so I managed to catch myself on his head, hitting my broken finger against his hard skull and letting out a yelp.

The Zebra let out a startled meeeep and set off in the direction of the door, with me and 3 dogs in hot pursuit. She landed on top of the door, then with another paniced meeeep, disappeared from view, falling behind the wall and the door.

"Damn it!" Hurdling over the old dog, I stradled the big dog, and kicked the small bird killer (who was frothing at the mouth) out of the way.

Finally I had my hands on the bird, wrapping my fingers around her trembling little body and lifting her to safety.

Heaving a sigh of relief, I straightened up, my eyes going to the cage with my small Zebra family (all 3 accounted for, staring at me with beady eyes).

The bird room...but how on earth???

Slamming the bedroom door in the dog's disappointed faces, I headed across the hallway to investigate.

When I hit the light switch, I was greated by numerous sleepy ?????? as my eyes sought out all the doors on the Zebra flights. All safely closed.

Then my roaming eyes landed on the flight of the magnificent seven and widened in horror...

One of the small feeding doors was slightly open, and out of the seven rescues I saw one male staring back at me.

The fluttering of wings could be heard from the hallway, from the bathroom, from the bird room closet...

Placing the one captured escapee in the flight, I actually remembered the close the half open feed door (which I don't recall opening in the first place) and grabbed the bird net and set out hunting.

At that all holy screaming pandemonium broke loose, as everyone in that room hates THE NET!

The guy in the hallway, was a snap, the one in the bathroom, easy. The two in the birdroom itself, were more of a challange. The one in the birdroom closet, was a nightmare.

Now let me explain, this closet is not some luxurious walk in closet.
It's a small, old closet in which I'd placed an upright wood shelf, with an heavy oblong wood book shelf in front of that. These I use for storage of everything bird, filled with boxes of toys, ladders, swings, containers of food dishes, water tubes, clips, bags of hay, extra branches, newspapers, bathing dishes, food seed buckets, spray millet containers , extension cords, extra fake plants and everything else you can think of.

In the furthest darkest back corner, I store extra flight and cage panels.

Well guess where this last small white feathered lady was hiding......

Moving things at that stage was absolutely impossible, so I attempted to poke the net in there and scoop her out.

Yea right....

Rushing to the kitchen, I grabbed a flashlight, hoisted myself over the bookshelf to get as good a look as I could, and there she was, the little white witch, wedged right behind all the panels.

For a long moment, I actually contemplated leaving her there until morning, but deep down inside I knew I couldn't do that.

So out came bags and boxes, out flew plants and toys and branches and, containers.... and in flew Elana, doing her one handed handstand (tee hee hee, I only wish), ending up almost doing a headstand to get the net in there, twisting my back right out of shape, scratching myself, banging myself, I reached in there....

Out flies the birdie, and gets snagged in my long hair.

My hand curled around her protectively, I began to extricate myself from the closet, almost impaling myself on an apple tree branch in the process, stepping on a swing and breaking it, slipping on some plastic bags, but there I was , bird in hand.

Safe in the flight with the rest of her family, she and the rest of them all set about scolding me very loudly, and to be honest with you, I felt like screaming back at them as I slapped the light off and limped towards my bed room where I was greeted by three anxious pups.

Sinking into bed with a big sigh, I turned off the light, pulled the covers up over my shoulder, and.....
BZZZ BZZ - Bzzzzzz...bzzzz....
A miserable large fly was circling my head.

"Shooo fly shoooo, damn you..."

He landed on the light shade BZZZ BZZZZZZ, back around my head.

The language that came out of my mouth would have made a teenager blush.

BZZZ BZZZZZ BZZZZZZZZ....

Flailing my arms didn't work, waving a book in the air did nothing, urrrghhh!

Finally I got up, waving a towel from the laundry basket above my head frantically. The damn fly buzzed even louder.

Limping to the kitchen, I grabbed my plant spray bottle and blasted him. He gave me a dirty look and sat down just out of reach to groom his wet wings, BZZ-BZZZ-BZZZZZZ, just cussing me out.

I went back to bed, thinking he'd had enough, but d'you think? BZZZZ BZZZZ BZZZZZZZZ.....,

I sprang out of bed, grabbed the towel and wooped him but good. When he landed on the floor I stomped on him, flattened him, pulverized him, then the dog ate what was left over.

Ahhhh, the sweet sound of silence, the softness of my pillow, and the blessed peace of sleep..... oh so so tired.

And then, d'you think I could get back to sleep?????

You need a very long nap!! I-) What a mess! I think now after that story half of us are going to have panic attacks in the middle of the night wondering if we forgot to close everything. hahaha

It's amazing you were able to locate everyone. Especially the one that got in the closet. ~X( #:-S

If it was your gouldians it would have been even harder. You know how they like to find a dark spot and just freeze, forcing you to play hide-and-seek

Babs

Hi Babs,

The thing is, I had no reason to open that small upstairs door.

You see, this flight is rigged together from panels from different cages, so here and there you get these doors that may or may not open, or open onto another panel, etc.

This particular door is on the upper left hand of the flight and kinda hard to access unless I'm standing on a step. Plus I can't recall opening it for any reason, unless when I brought it in it somehow opened and stayed open :-??

I think to be on the safe side, I'll twist tie it shut.

P.S.

As I looked at the picture, I can so see that this door was slightly open, I must be losing my marbles altogether 8-}

Lovezebs:

this is better than any sit com on TV .......
You have got to write a book "The Finch Files: An Adventure with Feathers'. Make it a trilogy....move over 'Lord of the Rings'--forget the Hobbits- you have Zebes with skills.
LOL

This is my all time favorite post!!!!!!!!!

Usually when I open my wallet, some empty seed hulls and feathers poof out, that tells you that that's one stake out that would be pretty fruitless, lol.

FinchLady

Glad you enjoyed it better than I did.
It sure sounds better second hand, than the actual reality

People are forever telling me that I should write books, chuckle...
Who has time to write books, when one is living the unending adventure?

So funny Elana, what I wonder is why would they leave in the dark?
And furthermore birds which have never left their cage are, in my experience, typically very reluctant to leave even an obviously open door.

I love the new flight for them. Looks like lots of food below so they have to learn to spread those wings and fly.

Well a few of them already did last night. *laughing
