1 Fledge and 1 dead

This morning I found that there was a dilute gouldian out of a clutch of 4 that fledged. I also found a parrotfinch dead on the ground. I had high hopes that the parrotfinch would make it, but in my heart I knew that it's chances for survival was very slim, as parrotfinches leave their chicks alone very early in their lives and he didn't have other nestlings to help keep each other warm. I have taken a picture of the fledgling with another gouldian that fledged 6 days ago. Ricardo mentioned that those gouldian fledglings were huge. Seeing them together made me realized that he was quite right. I can't wait for the other nestlings to fledge, because there are yellow ones that are quite flashy.

Congratulations on the fledgling, and so sorry about the PF baby.
Hopefully everyone else will make a successful debut in the upcoming days.

lovezebs Thx Elana. Just found a dead baby gouldian in another aviary. Now the parents are sitting on only 1 baby. I hope for the best.
It looks like the blue splits pair's eggs has hatched. I don't know if all 7 hatched. The hen is sitting very tight and didn't want to move. I am very curious to see if there are perhaps a blue of a silver among that lot. I will curb my curiosity and wait until they are bigger. You can better then in any case.

Honestly! I don't know how you can handle it! Your new birds are lvly! But there is nothing sadder than a dead bird! Mayb U get used to it. I was a nervous granny when my gold breast couple had a nest full of eggs. They didn't feed them and I had 5 dead little babies. It was their first try at it and their LAST. I guess that it happens quite a lot on the first try. I was feeding evry kind of good thing I could get my hands on. Hats off 2 you! I am a wimp!

Yes that yellow fledgling in the first picture is a big one

I'm curious how big his siblings are.

Babs His sibling is the same size. Also enormous. There were only 2 chicks that hatched out of the 5 eggs. The father just recovered from having a sore leg before the clutch. I hope that it was due to the sore leg that so few of the eggs were fertile.

Hi Denise,
You are not a wimp, and no, you don't get used to it.
However you learn to accept that Nature is not always kind and fair and gentle.
Death is a part of the life cycle, just like birth.
Some things are just not meant to be, while others are.
Sometimes we can step in and save some tiny chicks and yet other times we can't.
We do the best that we can, and always hope for the best.
