Blue

Post by MariusStegmann » Mon Aug 07, 2017 1:43 pm

I am decidedly not blue, but very happy. I found a blue gouldian chick in nest today and definitely have another pair of blue split gouldians. It looks a blue pastel.

How can you tell it will be blue at this stage?
I'm still learning
And I would love to have a blue Gouldian some time!

Vera

Here is an article, which you might find interesting about telling the difference between the different mutations while still in the nest.

I know, it is confusing :D

Wow thank you Elana. That is very interesting and helpful. I can see now how that Blue baby is identifiable!

Yes, the mouth markings is what I look at. Some people can also say exact what colour the bird will be by looking at the skin colour.

Congrats on the blue chick. As you say its a relief to know you have another pair of splits in there.
Holding thumbs this one makes it to fledging. It looks nice and well fed etc.

MariusStegmann Congrats on the blue chick! It does look well-fed. How many chicks total in that clutch--I see three eggs that didn't hatch.
3 Purple Grenadiers, 1 Goldbreast + 1 cat.

Ricardo Ronsini The cock is a rh pb dilute and the hen a grey head, pb yellow back. So genetically she is a blackhead.

@Sally Unfortunately only 2 chicks Sally. The cock had a damaged leg a while ago and he was on one leg for at least 3 months. It looks like he is not really hitting the target.
This is their 3 clutch and all 3 times only 2 chicks hatched. With their 2nd clutch, the one chick disappeared and they abandoned the other chick. I would replace the cock, but split blue cocks are scarce here at the moment.
