Curled feet

One of my society’s has a straight middle toe, but the two on either side curl not the nail, they are short but the actually skin part however when I first got him he couldn’t fly at all and used to crawl up the cage using his feet. And I was wondering if this is because of this he can fly well now not hover like the other birds but can fly took me months to help him but he can fly now and in the aviary but just seeing if this is an inbred disorder or something or just from climbing the cage

Not being able to fly, could be due to having been kept in a small cage when he was young, with no room to fly.

The funny curled toes however, could be due to being genetic or being in- bred too much, or from sitting funny in the nest when he was a nestling.

As long as he can get around, can perch, and has learned to fly, he should be alright.

I would however watch his chicks when they come around. If any of the chicks display the same problem, I would not breed him anymore.

lovezebs yeh I kept two of his chicks one until about 3 months old a boy and that one didn’t carry it, and I have one of his females now and she hasn’t got it either so maybe in luck.

My main concern was if he’s an inbreed

You're welcome Fraser,

If he is in-bred, then make sure you breed him to a female who is not related to him in any way. I would do the same with his chicks, make sure that if and when you breed them, it's to unrelated mates.

If none of the chicks show this problem, then it might have been caused by problems in the nest, or an injury when he was a chick.

lovezebs okay it is actually coco who has it, and I won’t allow him to breed with any related dunno why but I’m always paranoid about that. I’ve actually had to take his chick out because after ginge died I noticed them getting close and he started to sing to her,on my next batch of chicks I’m going to sell her with them try and find a nice home

I know that in- breeding or line-breeding is done quite often, to create a mutation, or hang on to a rare mutation, but I don't feel very comfortable with it either.

Hope you find nice homes for your chicks when the time comes.

I actually know the good pet stores now I’ve actually got one for my zebras I’ve been told every time I get chicks they will buy but just need to find one for my bengis
