Curve in the tail is an easy telltale

Post by MariusStegmann » Sun Nov 19, 2017 12:17 pm

It is very easy to see when my parrotfinches have chicks. Peter Twinspots also show an obvious curve in the tail.

Babs Thanks Babs. He is a beauty. I think he has forgotten that they are his offspring. They were the 2 two that jumped early about 2 months ago. I just looked in the nest and and saw that there is only 1 chick. My experience with them has taught me that they abandon when there is only 1 chick. So I am sitting with a bit of a conundrum. Do you leave it and see if they will raise the single chick or do I put the chick under society finches?

Lovely birds Marius.

Regarding the one infant.... you know your birds best.

Personally I would give them a day to see how they do, but no food in the crop and to the Socies he goes.

lovezebs I would have to change my ways. Normally I would not look in the nests on a regular basis. Now I will have to start checking the chick's condition a couple of time per day. Luckily they are still sitting on him. So they will definitely still be feeding.

Once they start feeding, they will usually continue (we hope [-o< ). It becomes a cycle of chick begging, parents feeding, so hopefully all will be well. Keeping fingers crossed over here.

They really are beautiful birds.

The little single parrotfinch fledged today. He is very young still. Looks like a redhead I think.

Good day Marius,

Your baby is adorable!

One question though, has someone been plucking the feathers on his head?

I love the way he's so trusting and sitting on your hand <3 .

lovezebs Nope, he is just too young to have feathers on his head. He does not have tail or breast feathers either. He can't fly at all. It is about 35 Celsius here today with not much of a breeze, that is probably why he jumped out of the nest.

Stuart whiting Some seasons I have bred 12 parrotfinches. Currently I have had 20 eggs out of an old pair, but they only managed to raise 5 chicks. My other pair is now sitting on their first clutch.
