Why aren’t stars using nest

Post by Fraza » Fri Jan 12, 2018 4:08 pm

Hi I would just like to know what sort of nests do stars like I’ve tried loads from :

Thin deep ones
Normal nest boxes
Cardboard nest
Small milk bottle with lid open on it
Group of 4 nest box slit ones
Then nest box with small hole

I’ve also tried putting leaves around these and they just sit in the leaves and not the nest I’ve now got all these in there at once, then one nest box with small hole covered in leaves t the highest point in aviary and still not interested

They will sit on any nests throughout the day but when all the others go in nests at 4oclock when the light goes out, they just sleep on a perch

The only type I haven’t used is the pic below

So is it bad when they don't sleep in their nest ?

Flight Feathers I prefer them being in nests because I’ve got a quite nasty zebra who jumps out of his bed and pecks a bird if they are on the perch near his bed then he jumps back in and I’m suspicious if he’s guilty for some deaths as the other day I saw him attack my white society and he slit her head [-X

But when everyone is in bed he doesn’t mind I don’t get it I might end up getting rid of him might swap with bill and he will know whose boss when he’s in an aviary with parakeets and parrots he won’t be pecking any then

I probably wouldn't put him an aviairy with parrots and parakeets... But I'd definitely seperate him from your other finches.

Stars are light sitters, do not like to be disturbed if you want results with your stars breed them separately in a breeding cage away from intrusive, aggressive birds... they do not tolerate nest checks well either.

I would not put finches in with parakeets, one snap ot the beak and serious damage can be done to a finch or worse.

One of the successful star breeders in the states told me stars love privacy, to sit down deep in a nest much like the gouldians do. The tall half moon entrance boxes he uses seem to be what they prefer over other nests boxes, some prefer to build out their own nests too.

cindy yeh well thanks that’s help this grass nest hasn’t worked either I’ve mever even had a nest to check as they’ve never been in one lol but they really aren’t bothered by my birds they was in with parrots and parakeets and doves and now she’s with me with only zebras,Java’s and society’s in the aviry

But thanks am gonna try that nest that you said and I don’t want to put them in a cage because they are aviary bred almost a year old and never been in a cage

If this nest doesn’t work I’ll put a nest really high up as my indoor area is tall and narrow

good they aren't in with parrots, hookbills anymore... the hookbills can injure small finches or worse.

Just takes one time, a hookbill that gets too cranky.... I have raised hookbills, finches for yrs and yrs also. raised English show budgies, seen them destroy their own babies, a hen bloody her mate for looking in the nest box. Takes one bite to take a finch's leg or toe off or worse....I always caution folks since finches are more delicate than hookbills.

Fraza. This is what happened under my eyes: i was in my local pet store, and near the budgies cage isaw one chasing an other few minutes when i roll back to this section, the victim was gone and the guilty was making a canibalism act, i can't believe my eyes hes was eating some flesh from that poor died bird. So becarefull and keep watching if u mixe hookbills abd finches
