It's real, these species can cross breed though usually there are behavioral differences which prevent it. You'd need to isolate a male and female of each species without others of their own kind to make it happen or it could occur if you fostered one into the other's nest so that it imprinted on the other species when it grew up.

Hybridizing can happen accidently in a mix aviary but to purposely set the birds up to breed to create a hybrid is frowned upon

If you know the species can/could hybridize avoid placing them together with nests for breeding if you can.

cindy yeh I would never set them up for breeding a hybrid if it happened in the aviary then it’s unlucky and I would have to except it but I highly doubt it will, I infact have a cherry finch and society hybrid I bought and he does have an amazing/strange sound tho

I like hybrids and would enjoy owning some.
But I was unable to ever produce any, even by fostering societies into Java nests, so I figure that this is not the easiest cross to produce.
It's not harmful assuming the species are not threatened, and you don't sell chicks as pure species.
And societies and Javas are well established in the pet trade.
