Mixing doves?

Post by animalobsessed » Sun Feb 04, 2018 10:43 pm

Sorry in advance for any vocabulary/punctuation flaws

I have fallen in love with ringneck and diamond doves. I was wondering if i could house the two breeds together (like a pair of ringnecks and one diamond). I would give them a decently big cage and they would mostly be freeroam in my room (but not always). Is there any problems with this idea of mine or should i just keep one breed. Thanks in advance!
Chloe - 2 year old chihuahua
Banana - 1 year old crested gecko
Penelope - zebra finch (age unknown, likely around 1)
Zane - zebra finch (age unknown, likely around 1)
Takisumi - juvenile double tail betta fish
Alex - 2 year old veilltail betta fish
la negra - adult guppy fish

My experience was the male ringnecks were aggressive to the diamonds and tried to mate with them. Female ringnecks were fine with them.

Diamond doves should always be kept in pairs. Ringneck doves can be tamed if gotten young and kept as a single bird.

Given the choice I would always pick ringneck. Diamonds are not very interesting and not very smart. I found them to really have no personality, and to be flighty and panicky. But I had a wonderful ringneck, very personable, tame and affectionate, and always getting into something.
