2 New Silver gouldians

Post by MariusStegmann » Fri Mar 23, 2018 10:34 am

2 New silver gouldians and a yellow sibling have fledged today. I have not yet managed to get any blue or silver gouldians to survive yet. I feel these two are going to be lucky for me.

Fraza

Many young gouldians die due to the stress of compressed moult; delicate mutations, such as bluebacks, are even more susceptible. Foster society finches would not be helpful for this since the juveniles should already be weaned by then.

Society finches can also carry Campylobacter and Cochlosoma, which could kill juvenile gouldians. This is one of the primary issues with setting up societies to foster gouldians, as society finches will not present symptoms even if they carry those pathogens.

Fostering species susceptible to Campylobacter and Cochlosoms under society finches is usually a last resort, unless the society finches tested as non-carriers and/or are being used to increase the supply of rare birds. Even if no birds are carriers, foster parents of the same species as their foster babies are preferred because the babies usually learn to act like their foster parents.

Icearstorm Ohright so with the rare ones you shouldn’t foster that makes sense actually because when I picked up my heck’s the guy had rows of cages with society pairs in bringing up gouldians but their was only ever 1-2 gouldians chicks in their so bet the others died

Babs A couple of weeks ago I found that I had a whole lot of Silver gouldians. I found 2 silvers that were bred out in a parrotfinch nest and another 2 silvers in another aviary. This time under gouldians. The 2 silvers in the parrotfinch I manage to ruin by treating them with Nyastat. Their crops were very bloated. They stopped growing normally after the treatment and eventually died. The other two silvers fledged a bit early but are fine.

Those 2 silver gouldians of mine died even before they started eating. I don't think that I will have any success until I breed them indoors. I see that I have another silver chick from another pair in a very open to the weather aviary. We had our first significant rain of yesterday. Luckily all my birds came though fine although the rain was blown right through one of my aviaries.

Fraza You should not foster Gouldians at all to Societies. No mutations, especially the delicate ones. If you foster, use another gouldian pair. I understand sometimes you have to choose between fostering and losing a chick, so I can see why it is done.

I have a Gouldian being raised by societies in a community aviary that I have right now. The societies stole the nest, so I did not know it was happening. I thought everyone in the aviary was too old to be having babies.....

wilkifam yeah I understand I just mean if ur pair don’t know how to raise their own chicks then put the eggs under society’s i personally think it’s good to leave just one chick with them then take all the oterswawa to the society’s, however I’ve been told I’d be daft to do that and just fister them all under society’s so I’m stuck in a predicament
