Last Sunday, I went to a fellow finch keeper that is immigrating to New Zealand. I didn't go there to buy birds but managed to buy a Masked grassfinch hen for a song. Masked grassfinches is very scarce where I live. Cocks you can still get, but loose hens are almost non-existent. Unfortunately The hen was dead when I looked on Monday morning. I had such high hopes for the bird. In my imagination I was already breeding her. I suppose I paid school-fees again. I should have first put her in a cage and given her electrolytes against the shock.

Oh Marius, Im sorry you lost that little gem. (I'm sure you'll be on the hunt for another).

You have a good sized aviary. Next time I would place the cage inside a shaded part of the aviary for a day or two so she can scout out where the water & food supplies are and get a good idea of where everything is located.

Sounds like she got lost, or she was already sick when we you purchased her.

Thx Babs. It will be quite difficult to get, and if I get a pair, it will be at a premium price. She was quite thin, there was no meat over the breastbone and her wings very hanging a bit. I mentioned that to the previous owner, but he asured me that she was fine. I was then seduce by the price.

But the pain. I have not felt the death of a finch like that in a while, and I only had her for a day.
A friend asked me to sell him a split for blue gouldian cock, and I refused because the bird doesn't look in good condition.

Some birds are just special like that. I'm sure you will always remember her. I'm very sorry for your loss.
