I went to see some birds today, and for those of you who have known me for a while, you will know what that means.

As you can guess, some of them came home with me

They're beautiful! And those are great pictures. I think my finches would have heart attacks if I tried close-ups on them. lol

You just have to sit very quietly with phone or camera set on one perch and wait until they come to that perch, then snap.

I honestly don't know if these Canaries are really any particular mutations or just run of the mill birdies.

I'm having a terrible time with my 2 female canary. Wishing I could make it work out with them, sadly looks like I must rehome them before they do serious harm to each other or the society. Tried a double flight cage but not working out. Think maybe if I try to trade them for another species that would get along better with the society.

Are ur going to be in a cage or aviary?

Strange that 2 female Canaries are not getting along. Usually females have no issues living together.

lovezebs - Oh my goodness Elana, you scored again! I knew you had come home with more birds when I read the headline of your post.
That dark gray/black head, black tail bird really is a Java? Beautiful! What kind of mutation is that? I've never seen it before.

PS: The local bird mart which had been planned for Nov. 3 was cancelled because of concerns about Newcastle disease which has been found in areas of southern California.

Yes, the black head is a Java. It is apparantly quite rare, and before this bird I'd never seen one before.

lovezebs - thanks for attaching the info about those black heads. Very interesting and if I understood it correctly, this should be a young bird since they are saying that the white cheeks usually appear after the second molt. Is it a male? I still have not found a Java but would love to have a male one of these days (love their song).

Not sure if it's a male or a female at this point. Also not sure how old it is. Still gets very flighty and nervous, so I'm giving them space and time to settle down.

Too bad that you still haven't found any Javas.

Are they still considered illegal in California?
