You can use eucoliptus or teatree oil on wooden surfaces.

I don't have an aviary, but use white vinegar and water with a little Dawn dish soap for the cages, branches and perches, then rinse well and sun dry. The odor might be due to dampness and high humidity. What do you use on the floor, and do the birds have access to the outdoors and indoors?

For the perches and swings, I woud use diluted bleach. Use the unflavoured one.

wildbird the main floor is wood and it is lifted off the ground so it isn’t laying in the wet when raining, then I cover it with fake grass.

The indoor is insulated and it has a heater in there

Bleach (and most disinfectants) only work if the surface is clean first. Organic matter deactivates the disinfectant. For that reason, it is difficult to disinfect wood surfaces.

In a practical way, though, you can soak the wood in a dish soap solution. After a few minutes, they'll scrub clean easily. They won't be sterile, but they'll be closer to it.

@Fraza, the problem might be the fake grass holding moisture against the wood floor. Try hauling that out for cleaning, and let the floor dry thoroughly.

Hi - I'm new here and was just poking around a bit, and thought I could add to this - even if it's a relatively old thread.

I use a product called KD Water Cleanser - the birds can drink and bathe in it, but it also can be mixed to cleaning strength. I use it each week after cleaning cages to spray down perches, cage bottoms, the cage bars themselves. Room smells very clean once that is done (even if it is winter and I can't open windows).

I keep/breed Lady Gouldians and have been using this for years and my birds seem to like it too!

Also---air movement by itself will often make a big improvement. The birds won't mind the air movement, IF there is an area they can get to that doesn't have a lot.

I have a fan on one end of a big aviary. Sometimes the birds sit right in the path of the wind, sometimes not.

@Dave well it’s funny you said this because I took off the platic sides and the wind can now breeze through and the smell has started to stop
