One of my owl finches got out of their cage the other day, and she flew away. Her mate has been calling for her and Iam sure he's going to go berserk if she doesnt come back. He looks so sad, should I get him another mate, wait for a while before I get another female, or what? He just seems so depressed. What should I do?

I'm so sorry! I would get him a buddy/mate. Owls are VERY social birds, and I'm sure he'd appreciate the company.

So sorry! It's hard to imagine when they look so sad, but your owl will accept another mate/friend. They need some company of some kind.

Thanks guys, I felt so guilty. For a couple of days now I've felt awful. The male is all by himself, and sleeps in a new nest by himself too. I've got 6 other owls with him for company. Iam hoping that this "mourning" situation will stop when I go to the store this weekend and see if I can get him a new mate!

I admit it's a long shot, but did you try using a recording of him singing to lure the hen back into a spare cage with seed?

I love the idea of a recording... but I actually put him in a small cage and low and behold two days after... there she was in a low tree two blocks from my house... she flew down to the cage (I didnt have to wait very long) but when I tried to nab her she got away and flew right out of sight. I havent seen or heard from her since.
Iam going to get him a Mrs. this weekend, cant handle having him so miserable. Wish me luck!

Ohhh, finchmom, the absolute same thing happened to me...I have yet to forgive myself. I did the empty cage thing, sans recording...no luck, and her partner remained silent.

At least you know yours is out there taking care of itself...good luck, I will keep my fingers crossed that your stray realizes how good she had it and comes home!
