I just came home to find one of my nestling gouldians (about 3 weeks old--not ready to fledge yet or even fully feathered):

1. Fallen from its nest
2. OUTSIDE of the aviary
3. In the middle of my living room
4. Alive an unharmed, and begging to be fed

This perplexes me because: the nest is 6' from the ground, the aviary holding the nest is 8' long and has 2 doors which were both shut and locked, but do have small gaps beneath them, the area where the bird was sitting was 6' from the aviary and in the open, and most importantly, I have 3 cats.

I have no idea how long the baby was out of the aviary, but I especially have no idea why the cats didn't try maim/kill/eat the baby. I put the little bugger back in the nest and s/he's happily being fed now. I guess I will have to look into sealing off the little cracks under the aviary doors to keep this from happening again.

I'd guess it hadn't been out for long or surely at least one of your cats would have discovered it. Unless yours are like most and sleep 23 hours out of 24. ;)

That is AMAZING. I have just one cat and would have definitely been a bird short! I had to raise my outdoor wild bird feeder after he jumped between 5 and 6 feet to grab a cardinal. Since I've owned finches, he's been below the cage almost every morning . He just hasn't figured out how to get to them! (And hopefully won't!)

nah, down to two finches and two cats, who will actually come sit and watch while I feed and water the birds. The first day or two they tried to get at the cage (hanging) but after that just sit and watch.

wow what luck, or else you have incredibly lazy cats lol. That little guy would have been a snack for Hades at my house! I'm glad he's doing well for you though. He must have fallen out of the nest and wandered out of the aviary... or maybe a cat gave him some "help" getting out and heard you come home before being able to have him for afternoon tea?
