I LOVE the Bird Mart!!

Post by Sally » Sat May 19, 2007 7:57 pm

We have a semi-annual Bird Mart here, and it is a chance to pick up new birds from mostly local breeders. I have looked forward to this for some time, and had planned my purchases carefully.

First, I got a pair of Owl finches. This gentleman was there last year, but I took too long to make up my mind, and when I went back to his table, he was gone--all sold out! Not this time, it was my first stop, and I got my pair.

Next, I needed two male Stars. A large, very reputable aviary in Texas had just sold the female of one pair, plus had another extra male, unrelated, so I was in business. (One of the males has been singing non-stop since I got home).

Next, I need three Gouldian hens. Here is where I abandoned my plan. I was looking for 3 normal redhead hens, and I got the first one. The second one (and please excuse my lack of knowledge for all the proper terms for LG colors) is yellow with a purple breast, and the third is yellow with a white breast. So much for resolve! They are all juvies, so will have some growing up and more coloring up to do, and now I will need to do some reading on LG genetics (my head is swimming).

Anyway, I am so excited I can hardly sit still. I brought all the birds home early because it was so cold in the hall, got them all set in their quarantine cages, and was going back to the Mart to now do my supply purchases. Well, I couldn't tear myself away from watching them, and finally decided I could always order supplies online! My brother is giving me his old digital camera, so I will have to see if I can take some pics (if I can figure out how to do this LOL).

Wow! That sounds so cool! I wish we had something like that around here! Last year I went to a zebra finch show just to see what a 'show quality' zebra finch looked like. They are are big! They had some other kinds, maybe societies, but they were all beautiful! Can't wait to see pics! Let us know if you need help with posting them.

I HATE the bird mart! I sold two societies and twelve button quail today, and brought home one owl, four goulds, and four lavenders!!! I hadn't planned to spend any more than I made selling birds..... Oops!

We don't have any regular bird marts here in Utah. There was one last fall, and I hope they repeat it this fall, but I don't know how well it did.

Oh, Hilary, you sound just like me! And lavenders!! One vendor at our Mart had a pair of lavenders, they were so beautiful, but out of my price range right now. Though I just realized that if I hadn't gotten the birds I did, I could have had a pair of lavenders--maybe next time?

I hadn't paid attention to the price, and when he had caught the birds and gave me the invoice I almost had a heart attack! Too late, though - those little guys are MINE!

And I NEVER said that I wouldn't buy, just that I'd TRY not to buy... I had already agreed to buy the goulds and owl, so the extra lavs were just a tiny step further...
