BREEDERS IN THE STATES AND AROUND THE WORLD?

Post by lovezebs » Wed Dec 17, 2014 9:01 pm

To the Powers that be...

Do we on the Forum, have a list of breeders? I have noticed quite often, that people write in, wondering If there are such and such breeders, in such and such an area.

Would it not be a good idea, if breeders, particularly Forum members who breed, could have a list where they could register their contact information, so that people who are looking for birds in their particular area could be offered some names etc.???

Don't know if this has come up before, but though that it doesn't hurt to ask. So, I'm asking (???)

That sounds like a great idea! We should start keeping a list.

We now have a subforum under Resources for Avian Business Listings, which seems to be aimed more at businesses with websites, etc. I wonder if we could expand this subforum to include hobby breeders? Posters would have to realize that this part of the forum is open to the public, not just to forum members, so if they would post contact information, it is available to all. Not everyone wants their email/phone number out there, I know I don't. Of course, to get around this, members could post their information such as what they breed, but give no contact information unless they wanted to. Instead, they could ask for interested members to PM them.

Sally
So why don't we do that? What exactly would it look like once It's put together?

Just as an example:

Pink Flamingos for sale
In Calgary, Alberta
???? ???? ???? ????
Or:

Breeder of Pink Flamingos
???? ???? ???? ????
Birds now available

Just wondering how you would list information (?)

lovezebs I'll have to check with Crystal to see if it would be best to open up the Avian Business Listings subforum to include hobby breeders or to set up a separate area.

Sally
Hi Sally,
I think it would be a good idea. I mean it would form a connection, between Forum members wanting to buy birds, and those who wish to sell.

Personally, I would much rather see my babies going to someone on the Form, rather than a Pet Shop. I would imagine other folks might feel the same way.

In my case, it's not really an option, because of wihere I am situated ( not a lot of Forum members In my neck of the woods), but for other people, it might really work out well.

I mean, if you were looking for more Black Crowned Waxbills, and could just key it in and come up with the contact information of whomever is breeding them, wouldn't that be easy? Especially if you could find someone in your area.

Would it work just as well to simply use the Marketplace to look for birds? Any member can make a post stating what they are looking for and where they are located, and asking for those members who have something to sell to contact them.

The Avian Business Listings is for those members who have businesses to list their information. A few have done so. When members need supplies, they can always go to that subforum to contact a vendor.

Sally & debbie276

I suppose you guys are right to some extent.
However, I was thinking of something more along the idea of a list of breeders and species that would be more or less permanent, where people could just look up the species they want, and see where there are breeders in their area, and whether they have birds available or not. Maybe I am just not explaining it right.

What I'm thinking of, would be more like:

Hmmm, I want a Zebra Finch. Go to the list and click on Zebra Finches in Chicago area.

The computer would come up with:

John Doe
Chicago area (contact info)
Breeder of Zebra Finches
CFW chicks m/f now available for sale ( $20.00 each)

Sarah Smith
Chicago area (contact info)
Breeder of :
Zebra Finches- Fawn Chicks now available for sale ($15.00 )
Society Finches- Crested, pied Chicks now available for sale ($15.00)
Gouldian Finches- No Gouldian Finches available at this time, please check back at a later date.

Am I making any sense?
Of course, it would be the breeders responsibility to update their information.

Makes perfect sense to me BUT, and here's the but, I doubt the breeders would keep it updated so it wouldn't be very accurate. Most on this forum are hobby breeders and don't have everything available all the time and go in and out of different species.

Personally I'd rather do a shout out for what I'm looking for in marketplace and get someone to PM me what they have then go through a lot of PM to people that don't have what I'm looking for at this time.

As it is there are a quarter of the posted vendors in "Avian Business Listings" that are broken links :?

This was just a thought, Deb. Don't know if it would work or not. Don't know if Breeders would up date it or not. Just thought it might be easier.

Anyway, a group of wee ones want to say 'hello'...

I like the idea. I agree it may not be kept updated. I don't want my information for non-forum members out there, so I wouldn't post unless it was only for members. Interesting idea.

The biggest problem with a breeder listing would be keeping it current. As debbie276 has pointed out, the Avian Business Listings are not all current. Those breeders who have websites may keep current availability lists on their websites, but otherwise, how would anyone know what is available.

For example, I have Strawberries, BCCB, RCCBs, BCCBs, Goldbreasts, Purple Grenadiers, RB Fire finches, Black-crowned Waxbills, Yellow-bellied Waxbills. However, since I have not been breeding in some time, there really would not be any point in listing myself in a breeder directory.

The advantage of the Marketplace is that breeders can list what they have currently. Or members can list what they are looking for. Per our forum rules, we can't list the contact information for other breeders without their permission, unless they have a public website. So any breeder listing would be primarily of forum members, and all forum members can advertise in the Marketplace.

I don't think such a listing will work any better than what we have right now. We're always open to new ideas and suggestions though.
