The going rate for Gouldians in South Africa is R125-150 per bird. That is about $18.

Amazed to find gouldians here at a local shop. Pet Supplies Plus had 2 normal redhead green backed birds, and two of a lilac variation. I almost never see those birds for sale here in western new York, and more surprising was the price: on sale for $70 per bird, regularly $100. the only other time I've seen them in store, price was around $120. however, they weren't banded and seemed kinda small? the societies they were with were bigger.
4 zebras Crystal, Beau, Bella and Dmitri (the little squeaker), 2 societies Diva and DJ (and their 6 adult kids), and 2 green singers Thor and Regina

Petsmart as of 2 weeks ago:
Cordon Bleus $85 each (on sale)
Bronze winged mannikins $14 each (on sale)
Spice finches $18 each (on sale)
All the birds looked beautiful and perky at 2 of 3 stores. At the third, they looked kind of puffy and sleepy. I ended up buying three of each of the bronze wings and spices between the 2 good stores.
Clark's Pet Emporium:
Owl finches $65 each
Cordon Bleus $100 each
Bronze winged mannikins $40 each
Totally overpriced local pet store and their finches didn't look healthy at all. Their parrotlets and lovebirds looked ok though.

Strawberries are now going for $400/pair around the GTA!
How much would you pay for a pair - with NO history and unbanded?
How much would you pay for a young banded pair domestic bred?

I would be very cautious at paying too much for unbanded, NO history birds--too many people have dumped their old birds on the market.
The most I have paid is $125 per bird, but very few of those have been banded. If I could find a young, closed banded, domestic bred, unrelated pair, then I might go $400--gulp!--or maybe not! Actually, since I have young birds that I have bred that need unrelated mates, it probably would be a good investment, just hard to spend that kind of money up front.
3 Purple Grenadiers, 1 Goldbreast + 1 cat.

I agree with your post Sally. I've paid $175 each for two closed-banded hens. Funny to think I bought my first (unbanded) pair for $150!

Petsmart here has a pair of male Green Singers for $35! I couldn't believe it. They are begging to get rid of them because they are such 'onery' boys. I wasn't sure I wanted to tackle that, I do feel sorry for the little guy's though
