Last time I saw zebras or societies in a pet store like Petsmart, they were around $40 per pair. Thankfully though a store manager told me a few years back that they were "phasing out" all bird sections in Petsmart and Petco because they lack the resources and staff to take care of them.

Personally, I think it's because of how many birds get sick or injured because of their mistakes or the mistakes of the high school kids that come in and work there.. like feeding the birds so much of that color-strengthening food that their digestive tract goes to heck (I'm not really sure the exact process, but I've seen it happen in store canaries, it ain't pretty.. those poor babies).

At any bird fair I've been to the prices are always around the same:
$30-40 for Zebra or Society pairs, $50-60 for Gouldian pairs, and $80-90 for Owl pairs. That's in the new england/south of new england area.

I plan to be a vendor at maybe the Oshkosh WI show or the Madison WI show this spring, as I now have 6 teenagers & at least 5 babies in nests (parents won't leave nests so I can't look). These birds should be ready to sell in spring, and what I like to do is print out a sheet from Finch Breeders Database. This shows band info, Mutation, Heritage, Origin, Medical History & a section for Notes.

I've made these up for several people I've sold to recently and I think they are great to give new owners. On the back of this sheet I'll probably include a print-out of Gouldian finch care.

Those prices are similar to the last mart here. I sold my GS pair for $100 and a single male for $60. The owls go for $80 normals and $125 fawns. The RTPF/SGPF/Forbes all go for about $250-300 a pair or $125-150 each. Society's are going for $20 now, but they're usually Self, or Dilutes, or Cream Ino. The standard chocolate pied goes for $15. My YF Stars sell for $60-90, depending on mutation and sex. This year, I only had one hen out of three clutches! Oh well.

In Seoul, South Korea, you can get Gouldians for around $35 (at current exchange rate). Last weekend, saw Societys for around $4; Zebras were around $5-$10.

When looking for a single Society recently, I called the local store and they said they could get one in from their supplier, and it would be about $35.00. For a single Society finch.

The nearby Petland has green singers for $90 each, cutthroats for $70 each, and zebras for $25 each. The cages are filthy and the birds look rather questionable.

Pet Supplies Plus had some ratty looking zebras a little while ago, they wanted $30 each for them.

If you look up ads for real breeders or backyard/bedroom breeders (as in someone with out of control breeding happening) you can do better on prices for the societies and zebras, but you have to drive 1-2 hours or more away to find anyone.

My area is insane.

At my local pet store I was looking around there...

Quails... $25.95 (Chinese ones)

Cockatiel... $12.00

Ring Neck Parakeet: $22.00

(Interesting the only finch they had were Zebbies)

Zebra Finches... $8.00

So I was planning to get my 2 little Finches at the pet store for my birthday, then I read in the paper the Local Bird Club bird show is on this weekend, I tagged along and they had plenty of birds on show along with zebbies. Here are the prices of there birds there.

Canary... $10.00 or $15.00 for 2

Zebra Finch...$3.00
Budgies... $8.00

All Parakeets/Cockatiel... $10.00

There difference in prices was just Wow! I ended up talking with a breeder of Zebra's to find he won the Zebra Finch Section. He said he'd let me buy a pair of his from his seelction of Premium birds.

$2.00 Each for Zebbi and Ziggi!

At the pet store near where hubby works, they have a few zebras and societies for sale. Place is new, so cages are clean. But they had three zebras and two societies in one little display case section, and they were of course beating each other up.

So asked them if they could order in specific types of zebras, like black cheeks or whatever, and they said they could try, but if they were going to request specific colors for me, I would have to pay for them and take them no matter what they looked like when they showed up. And it would be at least $35 per zebra, sight unseen.

This area is just nuts.
