I just caught this post. I have never seen/heard of a BLUE Canary. I googled it and saw they are Blue Spanish Timbrado. What a wonderful song this bird has also. Thanks, Summer Bird, I learned something new today. :)

Here in Ottawa, Canada

Canaries at petstores are around 120 give or take

Green Singers are 120

Some finches, I am not sure what kind they were, were priced at 219. I wish I remembered the species but it wasn't Strawberry or anything that I have never seen. They were fawn colored.

Reykjavík, Iceland

The price is very different between shops. I bought my zebra finches on 2.500 kr each ($ 19) but with different colours they can go up to 4.500 kr each ($ 35) The biggest pet shop here sells normal zebras on 5.500 kr ($ 43) which I find terribly expensive.

Breeders usually sell even cheaper.

Other finches (that we don't see that much of)

Bengalese Finch - 4.800 kr each ($ 37)
Canary - between 8.000-12.000 kr each (around $ 60-90)
Dimond finch - rougly 20.000 each ($ 155)

There is a list of prices with more birds on one pet shop homepage but these are the only finches I have seen recently here in Iceland.

Just an FYI that a person local to the GTA (Toronto, Ontario in Canada) is advertising wild caught Strawberries for $400 a pair! #-o He claims they are "about 7 months old now" and are just starting to colour up. He has listed them on Kijiji.ca for the Toronto area.

At the bird fair here in February there was a breeder selling finches really cheap.

Goldbreast $20 each
Orange Cheeks $20 each
Societies $10 each
Zebras $10 each
Shaft Tails $35 each
Cut Throats $35 each
Cordon Blues $60 a pair
Normal Javas $25 each
White Javas $27 each
Green Singers $35 each
Red Faced Stars $35 each
Parakeets $10 each

She had a few other types but i cant remember what they were. I ended up getting the cordon pair, 1 goldbreast hen and 1 star hen.

Just checked that out--that is a lot of money for a pair of Strawberries. A couple of red flags--if they are wild-caught, how does he have any idea of the age? A wild-caught would have had to have been caught a while back, in order to go thru all the import quarantine process, and I would be surprised to see many young uncolored birds make it thru the stress of being caught, shipped, and quarantined. If they are just starting to color up, are they all males, as the hens don't really color up? His photo, which must be just to show what they MIGHT look like, shows two males.

If anyone has a spare $400 laying around, I recommend you ask LOTS of questions.

Oh I agree 100% Sally - this guy is putting out all the wrong signals (to me at least). He offered them to me before he posted on Kijiji and I turned him down telling him I could get them cheaper and I asked him how he could tell their age, etc. Here's his email response to my Q's at the bottom:

If these are wild caught birds - how do you know how old these birds are? Where exactly are the birds from? Do you have references? Thank you so much for answering all my questions.

Just getting caught up with this, and yes, something seems not quite right. Now, if the price was a lot less, it would be worth looking into, but $400 is a lot of money. Seems like a few are getting in on the 'scarce Strawberry syndrome' and jacking the prices way up. I still question how he can even estimate the age at 'about 7 mo' if they are wild-caught. And isn't it odd that he has 10 pairs of these 'about 7 mo' old wild-caught birds? Geez, I guess all the 7 month olds were hanging out together, away from their parents (typical teenagers), when the bounty hunters showed up with their nets!

I paid (seems to be the going price) R140ea (less than $14) for my normal gouldians. The guy is selling blues for R500ea ($50).

Although I have noticed that your birds have brighter coloring than ours.
Is that price is for pair or individual? If it is a pair then I can make some import arrangements to my country. I am interested in all available mutations as well as normal colors in large quantity. If it is possible can you give me his/her contact or website address.
