Post by Taurus86 » Sun Nov 09, 2014 4:44 pm

Hello everyone,

I have four zebra finches that turned a month old on November 3rd, that I am trying to find homes for. I am still unsure of their genders, they are fully fledged and their beaks are just starting to change colour. If your have any questions please feel free to message me! :D

Welcome to the forum! The zebras may have fledged, but they will not be weaned for another month. They need to learn to eat and drink on their own. They can't really crack the shell on seeds yet as their beak is not strong enough yet. I give my fledges some millet to practice with eating a softer shelled seed and some other soft foods for the month after they fledge, then I slowly reduce the amount and they start to try the seed. They last thing they learn is usually how to drink water on their own. So, observe them to see when they regularly start eating and drinking on their own.

They have been eating and drinking on their own for a bit now. I've seen them eating at the seed cup (which is a blend of regular finch seed mixed with a weaning blend) and a steady supply of spray millet. Unfortunately, I had to take the father out a couple of weeks ago for being aggressive towards the young and reluctantly I had to take the mother out a few days ago for the same behaviour. I kept their cages side by side and kept a very close eye on the young to ensure they were eating and drinking.
