Hello,

I'm Luis, and thinking about getting back to keeping finches... it's been a long time. I'm curious to discover any breeders or hobbyists close by. My favorites are waxbills, african species, diamonds, shaft tails, blue-capped cb's.

Happy (nervous) to be here.
Thanks,
Luis

jimenezl This man, Murad, is a broker in Pasadena, MD. I've only had dealings with him once a long time ago (2007?), but at that time he had a huge selection of wild-caught birds. Hilary might be able to help you with local breeders.

Welcome to the forum! There's lots of good reading at http://www.finchinfo.com, where you will find many articles on finch care.

Thank you for the welcome, Sally. I'm checking out Mr. Murad's website now, but seems he doesn't have what I'm looking for at the moment. I will check back periodically, as he says he gets shipments about monthly.

Hope to get some pointers to other sources.

Kind regards,
Luis

Welcome!

I bought several birds from Murad several years ago, both at shows and out at his place and was pleased with the birds. Peggy Duval may still be breeding down in Norfolk (?) Virginia. Also the Baltimore Bird Fanciers usually have a show in October. That's a ways out, but provides a good opportunity to network. I myself have stopped breeding, unfortunately, so have kind of lost touch with who is still in the hobby in the area (but would also love to find out who is still active).

Yeah, Norfolk is too far. Pasadena and Baltimore are close enough. I used to attend the Baltimore show, very nice event.

I've checked 4 pet shops in my area and not one has finches of any kind. Well, I'm not in a real hurry, and maybe this is just a spasm :-)
Anyway, I'm thinking long term, maybe something to do in retirement, and, like always, one thing leads to another, and I'm entertaining the idea of building cages like this brazilian 'gaiola'

What do you think?

Still looking for local (to Frederick, MD) breeder or hobbyist with African Waxbills, common waxbill - st. helenas, blue-caps, orange cheek, etc. I keep checking MD Exotics but still don't have what I'm looking for.
Anyone w experience in shipping to the area? Any issues w the post office?

Thanks,
Luis

Have you checked with the Baltimore Bird Fanciers club? Clubs are usually a good way to network, as someone often will know of other breeders.

Emailed BF and MDExotics (twice) and no reply. Will call MDExotics this afternoon to see if I can visit this weekend but losing hope again. I'm hesitant to have birds shipped to me but may have to do so. It would be a nice father's day present if someone would peek in with some finches ;-)

Hi I live in Harrisonburg va and one of my local pet stores has a pair of little waxbills in their store. I believe the price was like 50 for the pair... Not 100 sure. It was called Sylvia's pets.

I can drive by in a couple days and get a pic if you would like
