41Gryphon You may want to call first, since that post is about 10 months old. They may not have them now.

I already called in, but nobody picked up. I'll try again tomorrow. Their site had them listed, so hopefully they have some available.

Stuarts is still there, they do close at noon to 1 for lunch though. Smallish staff so if they are busy the phone might not get picked up.

Nice place but if the birds don't look good to you don't buy them and definitely do a quarantine of anything you buy. They buy and sell, have a pretty large selection most times, good prices but when they buy they just throw the birds in with the others. That's why I say quarantine to be sure your not bringing something to your flock.

good luck, let us know how you do.

I agree with Debbie. Always quarantine your new birds. It is key.

I've never gone without quarantining new birds, so no worries there.

I've noticed that most sellers of goldfinches bought them from somewhere else. It's like there is no one breeding them. :?

Figured I could post some prices I've seen:

At a breeder in NJ:

-European goldfinches - $125 - $200 per bird

Kazimir's Pet shop:

- European Goldfinches - $100 each
- Shaft tails - $80 each
- Canaries - $40 per female, $80-110 per male
- Cut throats - $100 per pair
-Budgies - $20 each

Petsmart in MD:

- Zebra finches - $15 each
- Society finches $20 each
- Canary - $150 each (usually the bird is sickly and female too)
- Budgies - $20-25 each
- Conures $400 - 700

Called Stewart's farm and was told that they didn't have any. The search continues.

Bird shop in Tampa Bay:

I got my Zebras and Societies for $9.99 each and my Shaft-tail for $19.99. Though it was a local bird shop, the woman didn't know finches and thought the shaft was a java finch. I had to look it up when I got home because I was brand new and clueless (now only slightly less clueless).

Birds are pretty expensive here and breeders few and far between. We have one good all-around pet shop that gets in some neat finches sporadically as well as two Petsmarts that sell finches.

The prices at the local shop (The Ark in Merillville, Indiana) are highest, but their birds are extremely well kept:

Zebras (very large and healthy ones, might I add - they go through all local breeders): $30
Societies (I've supplied them these a few times): $30
Spice Finches: $30
Orange-cheek Waxbills: $40
Java Rice Finches: $60
Lady Gouldians: $150 / 2 for $250
Canaries: $150 for American Singers, $220 for Red Factors and Timbrados, $45 for hens.

Petsmart sells societies for $19, zebras for $17, canaries (mutts and unsexed) for $120, spice finches for $20, and cut-throats for $60.

Going through ads and local breeders I generally am able to find birds for cheaper prices than through stores, but I have bought a number of my stock at both Petsmart and our local shop.

Sheather

Some of those prices are pretty steep, Dylan.
What do they pay the breeders for their birds?

I saw some spice finches at a local petshop recently, but I was afraid to bring anything home from there even if I HAD been ready for more birds. They keep the litter and cage bottom very clean, but the bowls, perches, and toys were NASTY.

They had a pair of cutthroat finches that looked very distressed and possibly even sick.

And they were keeping their budgies in open-top aquarium style "cages" - so they had clipped ALL their wings. One would hope they were spending similar effort on keeping the nails of all their birds trimmed, but somehow I doubt it. After finally figuring out what that nasty grey thing was hanging in the middle of some of the cages (they were parakeet toys in finch cages that had been pooped on for so long that you couldn't even tell what color the wood had originally been painted) I didn't feel like hanging around any longer.

Anyway. The Spice finches were $16 - way less than societies and zebras go for at Petco/Petsmart. The 2 P's sell their societies and zebras at between $20 and $30 each. I have never seen any finch in either of the 2 P's other than the societies and the zebras.

However Zebras at another local mom&pop pet store go for $7. I don't remember how they were priced at this other place, nor what the cutthroats were going for.

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.
