It is high, sweetie.

Usually, when you buy birds from breeders, they are less expensive than when you go through breeders.

The red colour (by the way), will fade unless you are willing to feed them chemicals to sustain it.

Oh and there is no such thing as a 'basic, boring Canary' [-X

Good to know! The real trouble seems to be finding any breeders closer to me than Denver (the one you linked me to is in a Denver suburb.) So I wonder if the gal I talked to is getting away with higher prices because she's the only big-scale local breeder?

Mostly, I'm inquiring because I'm still not certain how easy it will be to sell my button quail so, who knows, maybe I'll have "leftovers" and will "need" to set up a second flight to house them... and, ya know, some other birds, too! ;) (At least, that's the story the husband is going to get...)

I think you hit the nail on the head, regarding why she's getting away with these prices.
Order some in, and give her some competition, ;))

I paid $150 for my red factor male on sale, normally $200.
And he has a wonky outer toe, too.

I think it all depends on the availabilty in which ever area you happen to be in, and how many breeders you have in said area.

If you have a lot of Canary breeders, prices will lower. If you have only one, of course they can charge whatever they wish and get away with it.

I live in Bakersfield, CA. Petsmart prices here are pretty much what B Camp said above. There are a couple of shops/ livestock stores that sell zebras anywhere between 7 and 10 dollars apiece. Gouldians 150.00 or 180.00 if yellow. Cockatiels in stores 100. A private breeder I know sell them for 45 and up. I am waiting for one of his clutches to hatch and hope he gets a male white face pied/ pearl for my iszy to mate with. These are just wgat I have personal knowledge of.

Does anyone know where I could get a pair of Cordon Bleu in the Interior British Columbia Canada area? Other than a pet store? And what would the cost be?

I was reading the beginning of the thread which was made back on 2008, without noticing I thought that birds were really overpriced here In the Chicagoland area but it's been almost 10 years lol

I went to a pet shop and the zebra finches are $19.99, the society are $25.

I don't think I'll ever buy a bird from a pet store, poor birds look depressed, like emo birds lol.
My birds were bought at a flea-market from a breeder guy.

Fraza,

Yes the prices are very much different to here in the uk, I've noticed that prices throughout the whole of America are astonishingly expensive compared to us here in England,

However you say that zebras are a mear £5.00 each,

My motto is that you only get in what you pay for,

Zebras at £5.00 each are what I'd call pet shop birds and are OK as pets but to any serious breeder these would be just rubish,

To get any worthwhile quality zebras you'd idealy need to pay a minimum of £20.00 each for the quality bigger exhibition birds
