Would anyone be interested?

Post by Icearstorm » Thu Jul 20, 2017 6:26 pm

I have limited space, so I'm trying to figure out who to breed a few months in advance. I will be in northeast Florida, and do not plan to ship. I will only be selling my pairs' offspring.

Would anyone be interested in:
Chocolate self society finches (American Euro crosses), probably $10-$20
Java finches (Mother would be red-eyed white, father would be normal split to pied), probably $25-$35

Are you still going to breed? If so then I would love some of the society finches. I would prefer some females but but both a male and female would be perfect.
If what I have heard is correct the female will sit on any eggs that fits under them even if it was abandoned by another bird?

FinchLover&Breeder

I probably will not be breeding any more societies this year, though three babies just fledged, and might be for sale in the upcoming months.

European self society finches typically aren't as good for fostering or breeding, and often need to lay their own clutch before you can give them another species' eggs. My Euro/American mixes probably don't have as many problems, but pure American societies may be preferable foster parents.

One of my females will sit on anything (or nothing; she's really broody), but doesn't seem to feed after they fledge. The other female is flighty and is probably more likely to abandon, though she successfully raised a clutch with her mate. My males are more dependable, with my pure American chocolate self successfully raising 10 offspring without issue. I'll have to see how the babies are.

Bear in mind that some society finches carry diseases that can kill other species' young. You can't tell if a society is a carrier until fostering a susceptible species under it, and there is little to do if one does turn out to be a carrier. If you are interested in foster society finches, try to buy societies from a gouldian breeder (even better if they already successfully fostered another species), as they are more likely to be clean.

alright thanks. keep me posted on the little ones. even if I don;t use them for fostering I've heard that if you keep a male and female together they can look quite funny playing with each other. so please keep me posted and let me know what happens. Thanks.

FinchLover&Breeder I have 2 male society finches. They get along great! I’m not selling, but you should consider 2 males if you don’t want to breed. Mine are buddies, it’s nice to watch. :)

FinchLover&Breeder Societies are very fertile, so be prepared for eggs to be layed fairly quickly if you decide a m/f pair.

FinchLover&Breeder. A nest would definitely cause eggs to be layed and hatch.. if you don’t plan on putting a nest in, their chances of fertility would probably be lower, but they are pretty resourcesful and it won’t stop the female from laying eggs on the bottom of the cage. As long as you’re prepared for that possibility, that’s fine. However, I do highly recommend a male/male pair. This way you can get them a nest and they can really enjoy each other’s company. :D

ok. so I'll get 2 cages for them. let the male/female breed one or twice then get another male/female breed. Then after eggs are layed and hatched I will sort the males and females into separate cages. That way I can have the best of both worlds.

Do you sell your finch eggs, and if you do would you ship them to the buyer?
