2014 Bird Marts, Fairs, Shows

Post by Sally » Sat Jan 18, 2014 1:18 am

I have started putting marts and fairs on the calendar. I did miss the first couple of marts in January, and the next mart is this weekend in Forest Park, GA--sorry for the late notice.

I have listed all the marts and fairs on which I have information for the rest of January and the month of February. I'll be adding to the calendar for future months as soon as I have time.

If any members know of any marts, fairs, or shows that are coming up, please post here in this topic. All I need is the website/link/location, then I can look up the events and put them on the calendar.

Thanks for the help!

Sally, that is so good to have a calendar of events. I'm going to the Feb. Sarasota Fair in hopes of finding my RC CB hen. You give such great advice and you are such a help for new people like me. Thank you so much. Kathie

I didn't get anything done this week, and this weekend is once again pretty busy. Hopefully, I will get something done next week!

For those in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, Stan Wilson is giving up on the bird marts, and will no longer be putting on any marts in our area. However, don't despair! The Fort Worth Bird Club has taken on the task of putting on two bird marts in our area this year. We are having committee meetings now to get this all set up, so as soon as we have everything finalized, I'll be posting information.

We will have a new venue for the marts, and we have reserved May 17 and September 6 for the marts. As a side note, the Fort Worth Bird Club will also have its annual show at this same venue on September 27. More information soon!

First of all I should start by saying that I own 6 Zebra Finches, 2 males and 4 females. They are housed in a 6X6X5 foot cage. Here's my experience, I went to the Bird Mart today in Pleasanton coming from San Francisco.

Parking was $8 and I paid for a vip ticket of $17.50 to get in early. Parking was easy once I located the entrance which was very hard since there were no large signs directing you. Wasted about 15 minutes looking for the entrance.

Exhibit hall B was particularly small, so this wasn't a large exhibition center.

Once I arrived I was appalled at some of the cages used to house birds. Some of the birds could barely turn around in their cages. Other birds were balding. Specifically there were too many finches in most cages, I counted 30 finches in a 12 inch by 12 inch cage.

Many sellers seemed to have too many birds in one cage, no matter what the breed was.

You should know what breed of bird you want prior to going and what a healthy bird for that particular breed looks like.

Buy with a credit card, many sellers accepted card payments through Square. Some accepted cash only. I would never recommend paying cash for an expensive bird ($50 or more), always pay by card and always get a receipt. In the event that the bird turns out to be sick, you could dispute the transaction. With cash you would simply be out of luck.

There was a terrific variety of birds, and all breeds seemed to be selling for 50-75% off what you would normally pay at a pet store. For example, one breeder had fancy yellow canaries for $35, the same bird would go for $129 at Petsmart.

The highlight of the Bird mart was the prices of cages, they all seemed to be 50-80% off. A cage that goes for $70 at Petsmart went for $25 here, excellent buys overall for all size cages.

I was able to purchase Zupreem pellet food for $8 rather than $13.99.

Overall, it was not worth it for me when I factored in the cost of entry, bridge toll, gas, and parking. More than likely I would not visit another Bird Mart in the future. There are better buys on Amazon for bird supplies.

The only way I would recommend the Bird Mart is if you are looking for a hard to find bird breed. Just be prepared to quarantine the bird once you get home to rule out any unseen illnesses.

Thank you so much for posting your experience at this particular mart. It is always good to get feedback so others can learn before they go. Marts vary greatly in their pricing, their policies, and the size/variety available. Some have very low entry fees and free parking.

Overcrowded cages are often seen at marts. To a certain level, it is acceptable as a temporary situation, as the birds are then returned to normal housing at the end of the mart. I myself have displayed birds in a 24x16x16 divided cage with 5-6 males on one side and 5-6 hens on the other side. I have also put a pair of birds in a small travel cage, selling them together. But 30 birds in a 12x12 cage would not be acceptable. You will also see birds in various conditions, some explainable, some not. Some marts don't allow young birds such as uncolored Gouldians, some don't care.

Cages and supplies are almost always a great deal at marts, much cheaper than buying at brick & mortar stores, because of less overhead. But as you said, you can also find good deals online. Birds are also usually cheaper at marts than at b&m stores for the same reason. And at marts, you can see the birds you are interested in.

Many vendors at marts are small hobby breeders, and they don't take credit cards. My personal policy is cash only, because I don't have the capability to accept credit cards nor do I have a way to verify checks. I only take checks from people I know. The big vendors do take credit cards.

New birds should always be quarantined, whether they come from a mart, a local breeder, or shipped from an online breeder or broker.

My local bird club has taken on the task of putting on two marts this year, as the vendor who used to do this has decided to pull out of the market. It is a learning experience for us, as we only had experience as individual vendors, plus our club ran the raffle table at these marts. We found that it is difficult to find a facility that is large enough, that is within budget, and most importantly, that allows live pets. Many facilities don't want birds because of the mess. It takes a tremendous number of volunteer hours in our case to put on a mart, something I never had to consider before.
