The last show of the season for the Texas bird show circuit is coming up on November 7 in Temple, TX. I will make the same offer as I have at the other shows, loaning show cages out to anyone who would like to try their hand at showing a finch. I will be the secretary for the finch division, so I will be there all day. You can bring your birds in a small travel cage, we'll transfer them to the show cages, and then back to your cages again at the end of the day. Just let me know how many cages to bring.

I am thrilled that novices are placing on the Top Ten bench! In Cleburne, SeaChelle placed 5th out of 156 birds with her fawn Owl finch. In Houston, another novice placed two Gouldians on the Top Ten bench, with 136 entries. How about another novice for the Temple show?

I really want to try one of the shows, but I guess I'll have to wait until next show season. I'm taking a break from traveling

slwatson This is the last show of the season for our area, then there will be Nationals in December (I'm not attending that this year). Next year will be another show circuit, starting with San Antonio, then Cleburne, then Houston, and finally Temple. We have a lot of fun at the shows! Show season in Texas is September/October.

I'll plan on showing birds in the Cleburne show next year. Where are nationals? I bet that would be a great learning experience for me.

slwatson Nationals are held at various cities, but for this year and the next two years, Nationals will be in St. Charles, IL--west of Chicago. It is a long way to go. Next year, I am going, either driving or flying, as I earned my Champion Exhibitor award this year, and I want to be there to be presented with my award! Fifty show points in one year to earn a Champion Exhibitor award, and I am at 65 points right now. First time for me.

Nationals are great fun, lots of socializing. Many of the top breeders and board members of NFSS attend Nationals, so it is an opportunity to meet and network with some of the best. If any forum members are in the Chicago area, I would strongly suggest that you attend at least some of the activities.

Thanks, but it would have been even more exciting if I had bred the birds I was showing. Of course, I won't turn down the award! The fact that our Cleburne show was a regional, with double points, certainly was a factor. Also, NFSS raised the number of points earned at shows, making it somewhat easier to reach Champion status. Still, I am very lucky that there are multiple shows available in my area, plus we have a couple of very dedicated breeders who bring 40-50 birds to shows, meaning everyone who places on Top Ten gets even more points (points are awarded depending on the total number of birds exhibited). We have some of the biggest finch shows in the country (not counting Puerto Rico, they make us look like small potatoes!).
