Aviary screening suggestions needed

Post by raymeedc » Fri Dec 17, 2010 10:58 pm

I'm planning to convert part of one of my rooms into an indoor aviary for my Java finches over the course of the Winter. What type of screening would be best? (I live very close to Home Depot, if that matters).

I use hardware cloth or some call it welded wire. The 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch is best if you are keeping small finches like goldbrest. The 1 inch x 1/2 inch is good for others. If keeping larger Javas then even the 1'2 inch x 3 inch would be nice. Many paint the wire either black or green to make it disapear. I left mine natural and it is not very noticable. In this one I removed the screen from some doors and replaced with the hardware cloth.

Here is one with hardware cloth on the inside of the frame and cloth screen on the outside.

Reagular screen is not good to use because the finches will get their tonails caught in it and can be extremely hazardous. It also really cuts down on the visibility and makes it hard to enjoy watching your birds.

If I have outdoor aviaries I will put the hardware cloth on the inside of the 2 X 4 frame and screen on the outside. This way the birds have mosquito protection but can not get hung up in the screen.
