cage size for zebra pair

Post by LiquidSunLight » Thu Jan 20, 2011 10:00 pm

hello! i'm considering getting a pair of zebra finches, and i'm looking at a 16in square cage or a 16x16x30in cage. would the 16 square work? if i get them, i want them to be happy/healthy, so i thought i'd ask :)
thank you!

First off, welcome to the forum. :D

If you are talking about a 30 in long cage that will be fine. The minimum that I would recommend would be 24 in long and 18 in wide, but that would be a strict minimum. With finches the rule of thumb is always the longer the better.

Personally, I consider 30x18x18 as the minimum size cage I would use for breeding. From the time the babies fledge till when they are weaned and can be removed from the cage, you can have anywhere from 3 to 7+ birds in that cage, so it can get a bit crowded.
