Exterior wood treatment

I am making outdoor aviary out of pine. I want to stain and treat it to make it last longer out of doors. I know it won't last forever and it will not be exposed to a lot of rain. Can I use any old stain/sealer? Finches don't chew so it doesn't seem like I have to worry about them ingesting anything. I will make sure it's completely dry so they won't get fumes. Thoughts/suggestions?

i would stick to waterbased stains and sealers,

I agree with the water based. if you do use anything else let it air out for a few days before you put anything in it.

I used a stain and sealer in one, it worked great, but mine is indoors

I use pressure treated lumber and have never had any problems housing finches in it. The lumber holds up to the elements and unless you have green freshly treated lumber with hookbills gnawing on it, no worries.
Of course redwood, teak and cedar is a bit more expensive but are safe , beautiful and last for a long time in the elements...also repells termites and wood ants
