heat lamps

okay so im gunna build a shelter for my canaries in winter it will be 70cm length 60cm wide and about 170cm high do u think this will be enough? also i want to put a heat lamp in but where do i position it and how do i stop the birds from burning them selfs?

Heat lamp on the OUTSIDE of the cage.
I have one on top of my cage with a perch directly under. (pix below)

I have a 2nd cage w the lamp on one side of a perch pointed down the length of the perch. This one has pros/cons, the bird can get closer to the light if it want MORE heat, but the first bird will block the radiant heat from the 2nd bird.
