Possible Aviary?

Post by winged » Wed Jun 15, 2011 2:46 pm

Below the steps leading up to my to-be-studio is an 8' by 8' space that could possibly be made into an aviary. It will get evening sun, be against the house on one side and according to the calculator, I can fit 32 to 42 finches in there! I don't even own any yet! But if I do get the fever and get a hold of some colorful finches, then this could be quite fantastic.
What do you guys think?

Big Aviaries are certainly fun? If you get the addiction like many of us, you could fill a stadium with beautiful finches. Where are you located? Also, as I quickly learned, if you allow them to breed, they will multiply quickly and you can get short on room pretty quickly.

Good luck and we look forward to future posts and pictures!

I'm near Poughkeepsie in NY. And why was the question mark there after saying that big aviaries are fun? Sarcasm is a bit hard to detect over the internet! I'm going to start slow and gradually build up, not just let them loose!
I was also wondering how difficult it is, for those of you out there with large aviaries, to maintain cleanliness?

Sounds like a good spot for an aviary. But please don't use the cage calculator exactly for a bigger aviary. I wouldn't put 42 finches in there... :P

As for cleaning, mine is indoors, so it doesn't compare to an outdoor aviary. I think in an outdoor aviary it's actually easier to keep it clean, if you can hose the floor and trees/perches/plants down.
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

I should have had a "!" there and not a "?"

The bigger the avairy the easier it is to clean. if you slab the floor it just needs a hose down and sweep out occasionally. For perches i use branches from trees like cherry, pine etc leaves and all. The birds like chewing the leaves and bark. When the perches are dirty, just throw them out and get new ones to freshen it all up again. very easy to look after.

My avairy is 9' x 8' i have about 25 finches in it, and i wouldn't want to many more. They have lots of space but i like to keep it that way.
15 Gouldian, 40+ mutation Zebs, Societies and 1 Cut-throat (the only one i ever bred)... plus babies everywhere
