Playing Musical Nests

Post by ranchnanny » Tue Jun 28, 2011 7:32 pm

My finches are playing musical nests :? All day the OCWB are busy building a nest and at night the Owl Finches are in it. :? :? The Zebras are in and out of each others nest all day. The exception are the Society Finches which pretty much stay to themselves. They take turns in the nest and are never out of it together. The Spice Finches well I don't know what they are up to playing with nesting material but no nest building.. It's all a mystery to me #-o

Musical nests, huh? Yep, sometimes they do that -- especially if the industrious nest-building bird is small enough to be intimidated by a bigger bird (which will then take over the nest).

And... some birds like a nest to sleep in at night while others will perch so the nest sleepers are willing to (occasionally) take over a nest, too.

You may have to try separating the pairs some for privacy if you want true nesting... :)

Thanks Anna for the comments it certainly is entertaining with these little birds. I watch them while drinking my coffee and sometimes scratch my head......trying to understand them. But I really enjoy it.

That's so funny! Now I know how other species eggs end up being hatched in someone elses nest! I guess the perchers don't mind the nesters house sitting at night. Now that's entertainment! =D>

LOL Mine are doing the same thing lately. My OCWB's have been nest building and sitting in the nest, then today, I saw our rccb's in the nest and tonight the OCWB's again. Who knows who will end up using the nest for eggs? So far, no eggs. #-o

I will say that my 3 male Zebs are very protective of their nests. If they catch any of the other finches in their nests Oh Boy! trouble in river city. LOL!! BUT! its ok for them to go in the other nests..... #-o
