What do you think of this cage?

Post by Kiko » Fri Feb 01, 2008 6:04 pm

I have been checking out the various local stores - one place has models that others don't carry.

I like this Hagen cage - link:
Hagen B4261

32 inches long, 14.25 wide and 19 high. Is that decent for a couple of finches? It fits the shelving beside my desk perfectly, so that my future finches can be right beside me.

Sounds like a more than perfect setup. My cage is 30x18x36 so its only a bit taller than this one your looking at. You should be able to put about 5-6 comfortably in the cage unless you plan to breed; just start with one pair and let the family grow!

Yours is 18 inches wide though, that is nice. Which cage (brand model) is it??

Looks nice. My educated guess is that you could keep about 4 birds in that size cage easily (but I don't like to crowd them). A couple of other hints (which I wish I'd seen before buying my first cage): the elongated cages are best because they give maximium horizontal space for flight, in other words, taller isn't better (this coming from a guy with two 'taller' cages. #-o I love the trays that pull out for cleaning the litter, but its also good if the bottom grate slides out too, because that requires frequent scrubbing.

The model you show will let lots of seed husks fall out all over your floor, so clear plastic sheeting will prevent that (even cages with a wide base to catch seeds don't always work if your birds don't cooperate; some are messier than others).

For perches, use branches (which you can buy as well as find in the yard), because the perfectly rounded and smooth dowels are hard on their feet.

Good luck.

I really couldnt tell you. I got it off ebay. I paid something like $80 -85 and got two of them. If I can find the seller I'll see if they are still selling and post a link.

Most finch folks will say rule of thumb is for a 30 X 18X 18 no more than 2 birds.

Always the bigger the better, Id be concerned with the 14 inch depth, just my personal thought

Thank you all for your replies. You have helped me change my mind about that cage, I will keep looking for one a bit bigger.

I have the "perfect spot" in my house for a cage, and a sturdy stand already. The ideal cage to fit there would be 30" by 18 deep, lots of space for height.

So I will keep looking, I am in no rush. I started off liking the vision cages, but when I actually saw them I wasn't so keen. I really like the look of the cage I posted above, I just need to find one a little bigger.

Perhaps I will find that ebay cage, or maybe I'll make a cage to fit my "perfect spot". I keep thinking about that, especially if I find a good used cage that I could dismantle and reuse!

Thank you all - I am truly enjoying this forum, and all of your posts. I will know so much by the time I get my own finches.

Lynn,

Check out our website for cages. We just recenly got in the new Hagen L01 and L02 which would look very nice in your office. We also carry many YML cages that are fairly inexpensive cages. We use over 25 YML cages in our bird room and sell alot of the YML breeding cages and flight cages. I just posted special offer ofr the Hagewn L01,L02 to Forum members under the "Housing" section of the forum. If you don't like that cage or the special let me know and we'll see what we can find that will work for you.

E-mail me directly or give us a call 217-487-6000 and we'll see if we can get you set up with what would work best for you and your birds.

Hi Sean,

I actually did see your post and checked out your cages, great assortment and good prices (I think!).

I like the Hagen cages, I like that you can lift the top and clean the bottom. I have to have a better look at them, I saw one in a local store and was concerned about the gap in the corners, may not be a problem with the gouldians I plan to get.

Are the YML those low priced flight cages? Love the prices on the 30x18x18"/36"
I much prefer the base on the Hagen's though! So much to think about.

I am in Canada, so your offer may not be useful to me - but - sometimes I have stuff sent to my relatives in NY and they bring it up when they visit.
So that may be a possible. Either way, I will not be purchasing anything until summer at the earliest, I am doing my research ahead of time.

Thanks for the post Sean.

Keep us in mind when your ready. As strong as the Canadian dollar has gotten our US dollar with the exchange rate what it has been it may be a btter deal even if we ship to Canada. When you get ready to make a move let us know we can always check shipping rates. Keep an eye on the dollar. If we can help you in any way let us know.

Lynn,

Don't know where in Canada you are in but here is a good site for cages that you might want to check out. They are located out of Toronto, Ontario

A source for big cages

Post by Nipper06 » Mon Feb 11, 2008 1:59 am

I got a big cage like the one pictured below at this place http://www.aecageco.com/. The specific cage is here: http://www.aecageco.com/Flight_and_Avia ... _Cage.html. They deliver and they were having a sale recently.

This cage is strong enough for small parrots but I really like it for finches because they get lots of space and the whole cage is on wheels so I can move it easily. I still only keep one pair of breeding birds in cages this size though, because crowding makes for problems. But, if not breeding, I think up tp 6 finches could fit in here comfortably. I think the actual cage is 31 3/4"x21"x35" but the top is actually 59 inches from the floor because it comes on its own stand. I have 4 of these.

Ill be trying to catch a bird and another heads out the door, other than that I LOVE these cages.
I purchased all mine for MAXIMUM $80.00 each,

I have gone back to my 3 cage stackers MODIFIED off the floor for breeding though.
Oh and these cages you have I have gouldians in them, lovebirds, cockatiels and sun conures so they Are TOUGH ...
