First Time Building One :P

Post by FinchFlurry » Sat Sep 03, 2011 7:18 pm

So, I recently told my Dad I wanted to start breeding finches. Since i'm 19, and it's still my dad's house, haha, he said it was fine so long as he didn't see any of it outside my room

So, looking at the cage i was keeping them in, I couldnt help but feel like it was too small. So i decided to build one instead.

I have 2 years of woodshop under my belt, haha. So i hoped i'd be okay.

Since I have very limited space, couldnt do more than 3 feet in length, 2 feet in height, and a foot in width.
I'm also on a budget...

So i went to Home Depot and got some wood. 15 pieces i bought today. The wood was on sale for a dollar a piece.
Basically, i'm going to be able to build this things for less than 30$. thank goodness.

here are some photo's i took of the steps:

Always set myself up with good classic rock music, and a big glass of Fruitopia!

It's not finished yet (i still have the slide out base to make) but i wanted to give my little brother something to do, so i let him paint some of the frame :)

TOMORROW after work, i will put up the wire mesh :D (since i cant go get more wood... evrythings closing early :/

Looks like your Woodshop classes are paying off! Please keep the pictures coming, I love to see how people build their cages and aviaries.

Caution on the door. You need to put a skirt on the inside to prevent the birds from flying past your arm when you open the door. Belive me, they will sometimes fly thru a small gap to get out. Had that happen to me more than a few times. So keep the door to your room closed when you open the cage door.

BTW good job on the construction.

Great job!...To minimize the escape out the door, maybe you could put smaller doors on the sides, or add a small door in your large door in the front...Just a thought

I thought of that too, but then I'm not too worried about it.This is only for 2 birds right now, and They're both pretty calm around me and my dad. They dont get scared when I get near or stick my hand in the cage. I've let them out of the cage, into my room before (I brought in a big branch for them) and they just sit there while I do work on my laptop.
Eventually, they go back in themselves.

someone suggested i just put a skirt of some sort in the doorway. I'll see what i can do.

Thanks for the suggestion! :D
