I've been plotting my perfect aviary for quite a while to fit my specific needs. First off, I want them to be in my living room- it's the easiest room to regulate temperature, has the most natural light, and I want to seeeeee them all the time! Secondly, they have to be higher up to be safe from my dogs- I have three border collies and a neurotic cattle dog that play like crazy, so it needs to be solid-based and unable to be knocked over. Also needs to have a solid front/sides, as I know they may initially want to HERD THE BEEPING FLUTTERY THINGS! I'd also like to gain some storage. So I came up with this particular plan...
I'm going to pick up a used bathroom vanity or kitchen cabinet at the local Habitat for Humanity warehouse. It'll have a size of approx. 5L x 3W. I'll then build an aviary similar to this one on top of it:

Solid doors on either end, solid back, plexiglass front, vents on top, sides, and front. I'll leave off the hinged bottom door and hang a cheap rolling pull-down window shade to the center ceiling of the aviary- that way when I need to clean, I just open a side door and pull down the shade, trapping the birds on one side of the aviary and allowing me to clean and replace food/water/etc.
Any suggestions from personal experience? This'll be my first aviary. Going to have to have it built by November 1, as I'm going on vacation and am worried (ok, terrified!) about someone not bird savvy messing around with their cage every day!
New aviary plans- suggestions?

Re: New aviary plans- suggestions?
Your plan looks great!....What a good idea to build it on top of a vanity!....That will be a great solid base and should be "dog bump" proof....Keep us posted on the progress....Can't wait to see the pictures!
