Re: Busy Busy Busy...
woke up this morning, and re built my mesh doors with cage fronts instead. this is a way better set up for feeding the birds.. i would do it with all my builds, but mesh is cheaper than cage fronts.

Anna, I used to collect the button quail eggs and hardboil them and feed them mashed with shell and all to the birds. Of course I was curious how they taste and tried one, and it tasted really good actally. Very smooth tasting. If you like hardboiled eggs you'd like quail eggs. And why not, people eat quail eggs from coturnix quail, and the button eggs aren't really that much smaller.
But I didn't eat it regularly, I always fed them to the birds. But it would be a big waste to just throw them out if you have the option to collect them every day.

Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

I was just curious about that Ursula -- thanks for the info! It would seem a shame to let them all go to waste if they're not being incubated.

Re: Busy Busy Busy...
More or less finished the job this morning...replaced two lower panels with a 6x3 sheet of plate glass...very heavy. This allows a lot more light. So when the two overhead windows are dropped over the feeding area...that's it...bring on the snow..
And if I want to in spring I can remove all the panels in about ten minutes.
By the way...all the glass was cadged off double glazing merchants at the side of the road who were reinstalling windows...Saved them a trip to the tip and got my stuff for free...

Seems a long time since the original shed was built. (And a lot of work)

Just wondering.... do you still have your mesh or screen behind that newly installed glass? If not, if it ever got broken accidentally (flying rock from lawnmower or something heavy inside falling against it, etc.), all your birds would get loose.
