New night lights

Post by nelloyello11 » Sun Oct 09, 2011 1:19 am

Well I had a little scare last night. My BC zebra pair who have just started laying seemed to want to start sitting last night (after only 2 eggs); about 2 hours after lights out, they flew frantically out of their nest, flapping around the cage until I could get a light on. They settled down and I turned the light off, but did this two more times during the night, loudly enough that it woke me up, and I eventually just left a lamp on in the room.
My fear is that since they are first time parents, they will do this with chicks in the nest, and end up tossing them without knowing it, which would be devastating after my anxiousness waiting for them to nest... (see http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15929)

So I decided to find them some night lights, and had settled on a sttring of lights. I was hoping to find some orange ones, but no luck. I settled on some LED multi-faceted round red ones. They are plastic bulbs, not glass, so I don't have to worry about breakage. LED is great because they don't heat up like other string lights and use much less energy. And since they are not those pointy ones, they don't really stick into the cage at all. For now, they are just draped over the tops and down the sides of the cages, giving a nice spread-out glow, without being too bright. Everyone seemed to go to sleep fine (if not better than usual).

That sounds like a good idea! Right now with some of the stores offering holiday lights early there is a good selection of the LEDs. If you are still looking for orange, I think Target has some in the Halloween section.

That's actually where I went. They only had purple/orange together, or the opaque orange, which I don't like because the paint always flecks off over time. But I decided I like the round plastic LED bulbs better because they don't really get hot, and I don't have to worry about a bulb breaking into the cage.
Once I got them set up, I really like the red. Since the birds are in our living room, I was initially worried about glare on the TV and whatnot, but it looks like it won't be an issue!

I need another string of lights.
I'm waiting for the XMas lights to come out onto the shelves.

Target has some out now, in the aisle(s) behind the halloween stuff!
