What type of housing do you use for handfeds as the grow?

What type of housing do you use for handfeds as the grow?

Post by finchmix22 » Fri Nov 18, 2011 4:03 pm

I am very sad and feel so bad that I lost a handfed owl chick, who was just about to fledge, when I found it dead with the head in the water cup ( for humidity in the baby wipe warmer). I cried and moped for days and now am asking everyone when they change from an incubator type setup to something else as the finch hatchling grows? This one had some feathers, but not all over yet when it died. I had not realized it was probably moving around and trying it's wings while I was off doing other things. I just went every three to four hours to feed the chick, but found it dead. I had a little wire nest with a pad and paper towels that were torn up as a bottom layer. The chick must have tried to fly and fell out of the nest and into the one inch cup for water I used as a humidifier.
Now, I realize I was not educated about how to decide when the chick is ready to start using the wings and moving around. I wonder now, what I could have done differently, besides not using a water cup, to house the almost fledgling? The baby was 18 days old when it died. So, I guess it would have fledged any day at that point. The bird was still so tiny, I did not think about the development and possible moving around.  #-o

Deborah, use a cosmetic sea sponge or a natural sponge in the container of water. Once chicks fledge that are handfed I use a small cage with a heat lamp.

Sorry for your loss.

So sorry you lost the little one, Deborah. That almost happened to me recently with a little Owl baby. Luckily, I found it in time, and it had its head above water. I will use the sponge in the little water dish from now on, so I don't have that happen again.

Mine stay in the baby wipes brooder until they are getting close to fledging, or at least close to fully feathered. Then I move them to one of those plastic 'critter carriers' that are sold in the reptile section of pet shops--like a small plastic aquarium with vented top (large size). This keeps them out of drafts. From there they go to a small (16x16 or 24x16) wire cage with perches. Once they are weaned, they go into a regular cage with others of their own species, so they can learn how to be birds.

I do a combination of what Sally and Cindy do. I start with a critter carrier (heat adjusted with a reptile hot rock). Always a sponge in the water bowl. When they fledge they go into a small cage with a heat lamp.

I use a small fish tank with reptile heating pad by Zoomed sandwiched between two pieces of glassset, it is placed under a container with bedding in it. When it gets big enough I add a screen with a heat lamp on top on one side and remove the heating pad. Then it is moved to a small cage with a heat lamp.
