Their new cage arrived!

The cage looks huge with them in it. They are flying around like they are so happy! Here are some pictures of them enjoying themselves.

Do you think its okay to leave in the top wooden perch? They seem to really like it. They fly from the small ones at the bottom up to the top one a lot and sit up there together.

I have another small wooden perch with three little branches sticking out of it coming tomorrow, and two nests for them to rest in coming tomorrow too. Hopefully it won't look so bare in there when I get those items in.

It looks great Kristy! The red color really shows them off! Id leave the perch in if they like it. I bet they love all the room they have!

Just we word of warning though- if you give them a nest they will breed. They do not need a nest to roost in and will be perfectly happy sleeping on the perch. If you don't want babies, skip the nest!

Kristy I would leave the top perch there as they feel safer. Mine love to sleep on the top perch although now they've gone to sleeping in their food container. Yikes.

Definitely leave the top perch-finches love height. Zebbies dont need a nest as societies do. Nest means babaies, and lots of them. Love all the space they have-good luck

Thank you If they start laying eggs, can't i just throw them out and add the little plastic fake ones you can buy? They will eventually give up wont they? I hope anyways.

If you swap the eggs it might work, but my grandma got a female zebra from her friend at work, and it had no male, I went over to candle her eggs and there were 31 eggs, only 4 were fertile and she just kept laying! She eventually took out the nest. Hopefully you won't have that problem

The cage looks cute and the birds sure look happy!

I hope you don't mind me mentioning one thing though, just for future (or other members' consideration): you are wasting flying space with a cage like this. If it didn't have the cute slanted roofs and the steeple part, and it the cage was just a rectangle shape with the same width and height, the birds would have about twice as much room.... It would probably look a little plainer, but cages can always be decorated with fake plants and other things.

Kristy, that's a cockatiel cage. I read your previous post and I am sorry no one said anything or you might have returned the cage to Petco. I know you intend to upgrade. I just feel bad you could have gotten a 30" length flight for that price. Then they'll be able to fly some. It's a pretty cage you got, nevertheless.
You can still use that upper part to your advantage. The birds can go up there to feel safe when you service the lower part of the cage.
Also, it looks like the cage is now on the floor in front of a fireplace? If so, you need to put it high up.
When you're new to finches like I was, there are a lot of things you may not have thought of. People here are not smilies and agreements only all the time. You will find good information here. Don't forget to read the finch info center (link to the right). It really helped me when I started out.

Cate thank you for the info and concern. I only put the cage there to take pictures. It's actually up on top of a bookshelf near a window. I have 4 kids running around and two curious cats. So they have to be up high to be safe from all the craziness. At the moment I don't have room for a cage that's 30 inches long. My bookcase is only 23 inches long and 19 inches wide. I hope in the future to get a tall stand and cage that are bigger, but until then this will have to do. They seem happy tho.
