Guard for cage door

Post by finchandlovebird » Tue Jan 24, 2012 1:01 pm

I'm sitting here with 2 nets, waiting for my young Gouldian to show herself. She is a wild girl & has flown out the door in a flash before; don't have that much trouble with the other ones.
Am cleaning cages today & everything has stopped as I wait to catch Banana.
Does anyone have an idea for rigging up a (maybe a cloth) to hang from the large cage door to prevent them from flying out like little bombadiers?????????? Probably would have to have hooks on the top & hang in inside the cage door. Ideas Please #-o

Bcamp had some ideas for this, if you do a search for posts under his name with that subject, maybe something will turn up.

I have read of people taking a piece of heavy vinyl (you can find it in fabric shops), then they cut a piece a bit larger than the door, put a couple of hooks at the top, then come down an inch or two from the top and cut vertical strips--it should look sort of like those vertical blinds you see sold for patio doors. They either leave this in place inside the cage all the time, or they install it when they want to clean, but that way, they can reach inside the cage through the strips, yet the birds cannot fly past.

I went to a traveling bird exhibit one time where they did this on a large scale. To enter the aviary, you first went through a screen door to the safety catch, then through these heavy vinyl strips covering the next doorway--no birds ever escaped, they said.

Thanks Sally; your idea sounds good; I will also look for BCamp's posts. I just need some kind of idea to get started. I caught Banana by the way, and all birds are happy now & cages are clean!! =D>

I just use an old dishcloth with about a 4" vertical slit cut in the center, and attach it to the cage door opening I am trying to block with several clothspins. I can slide my hand in, but once I take my hand out, the slit closes enough that it is not an enticing opening for escapees.

I did the "vertical blinds" that Sally suggested. I had an old shower curtain with metal grommets in it & have it affixed to the top of the cage w/hooks. Works great!!!

im glad this was posted  my male green singer is always the escape artist. Everytime I go to open the cage door I put one arm in and the other hand trying to block the door....he always gets through and flies around the house.

It takes a few mins to catch the bugger hes so fast!

I never thought to put something in the doorway! #-o
