Water for large indoor aviary/flight?
Re: Water for large indoor aviary/flight?
I use a glass water bottle designed for rabbits for drinking and use a large plant saucer for bath water. The water bottle stays very clean and is easy to use. The birds learn very quickly.

Thank you flyinverted for that info on the flip-it feeder. I think that is what I was looking for. It has given me many ideas. And thank you Pooh for bringing it up again. Glad things are going well with you.

I have always thought this was a clever way to deal with food and/or water dishes without going into the aviary. The swing-out door/panel is similar to that flip-it feeder door that flyinverted uses, but this is just built as part of the aviary framing. Seed hoppers, small dishes, etc. could be hung from the wire, or a small shelf could be put on the inside where dishes could sit. This would be a place that could have seed, eggfood, veggies, and water all offered in one place.

I do not have a large flight, but try small animal water bottles, once one bird uses it, the rest will catch on. You can even get larger sized bottles like rabbit ones to hold more water. Mine adjusted to hamster bottles quickly. You can also put a water dish under the bottles to catch falling drops and for bath water, they'll catch on fast. Good luck!

I have some of those waterers from the picture with the red bottom - if you want them Chase I will bring them to you next time we meet (at fair?)... Laraine sells them too I think?

I have the screen door style aviary and found it easy to just put a loop of coated wire fastened to the top by the front edge, so that it droops down enough to slip a tube through the front hardware cloth. the wire loop keeps the bottle upright and with a perch inside, my Zebs peck at the tube ball and sip their fill. I also use a plant dish on a small table for baths that I change every morning.
There is also a cage style water dish down low if they want any more. I find it enjoyable to take that in with fresh cold water and hold it up. Most will come for a fresh cold drink while I hold it.

Just had a thought today about a bath in my aviary (still under construction). I have polydactyls that have used a cat water fountain and was thinking it might be nice for finches also (don't worry.. the polys NEVER get into the bird room). It has a filter in the top, but I think it would need a filter close to the pump intake.. just a thought.

Would finches enjoy the water coming from that spout?

Re: Water for large indoor aviary/flight?
Cool ideas.
I have a larg(ish) aviary and I'm using ball valve drinkers. I love them for drinking water but of course they cannot do double-duty as baths.
I have been furiously thnking of the automatic watering/misting system I set up outside for my plants. Potentially I could run the 1/4" tubing through the wires and create a bird shower -- water that sits invites problems, but the problem was (and still remains) drainage. Essentially I think a shower system with pipe drainage as the water falls would be the only semi-sanitary option. But how to do it is the problem... if I solve it I'll take photos and you guys on the FF will be the first to know!
