Correct size and length of perches - short ones a danger?

Post by Kiko » Thu Apr 10, 2008 7:00 am

I was shopping at the lps and their manzanita perches (branches) were on sale.
My cage is 18 inches wide and the 19 inch perches were about the thickness of those regualar wooden dowel perches, with a few inches of the end branching into smaller twigs.

The 14 inch branches were quite a bit thinner and had several very thin off shoots.

I bought the 14 inch, but now am second guessing myself - does the 14 constitute a danger because it leaves a 4 inch gap with sortof jagged ends of the branches? (the ends are not sharp, but have natural jaggy ends)

Should I replace them with the 19 inch branches? Is there any reason NOT to replace them so I won't worry? Will the 19 inch branch be too thick?

I am a worrier!!

Kiko, I wouldn't replace the perches, in fact my birds enjoy hanging on the edge of the branches like monkeys. I have ends sticking out in my breeding cages and my large aviary and have never had any injuries.

Hope this makes you feel better

In my 30x18x18 breeding cages I have some 12" manzanita branches. The finches seem to like them fine!

Thank you too Liz, I also picked up a perchup perch and they are ordering in a perchup swing for me! I'm on my way to having everything necessary!
