Coconut Fiber
I will admit I have never used coconut fiber but I'm reading here it seems to be a popular material for nests. I bought a brick of coconut fiber (in the reptile section of local petstore) and let it absorb moisture as directed. It seems more just like a crumbly mulch though - I thought it would be more like strands (like what you'd see on the outside of an actual coconut).
Did I buy the wrong thing... or am I just doing it wrong?

Re: Coconut Fiber
It sounds like you got the wrong kind! It is like strands, I havent seen it in petstores. (maybe others have) I only see it at fairs and online. http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com/shop-nest.php scroll down towards bottom of page, that is what you are looking for. I would say unless you have a reptile....use it as mulch around a plant.

I belive you bought the bedding for lizards?
I do not think it is the same, it is more strings, and dry. You may have to order it.

Re: Coconut Fiber
I picked up some coconut fibers at a bird fair, but am wondering do the finches like it that long? It's like 12-14" in length. I ended up cutting what I gave to them in half. Should I leave it long instead?

I give them it cut in half, easier for them to handle. You can offer different lengths and see how creative they can be!

Re: Coconut Fiber
Ive gotten mine at the petstore (petland or petsmart) I got it in the small rodent section (hampsters/gerbils) It was an orange bag with a big ball of coco fibre, and some shredded paper. I used the paper for my parrotlets on accasion. I cut the coco fibre up a bit and pull it apart.
The cocofibre ball in that bag goes far!
