Are there too many perches in my cage?

Post by livinonaprayer » Sat Apr 12, 2008 1:16 pm

Our cage size is 25" width, 13" depth, 22" height.
There are two 25" dowel type perches going across, six 13" dowel type, and various other sizes and shapes. Total of fourteen perches in all.
It houses two zebras and a nest with a lot of eggs.
I've been looking at the various cage set-ups, and I think we have far too many perches.
I need a bit of advice on this one.
Thanks.

My breeding cage is 30"x18"x18" and I have 1 perch at each end plus one small 4" cement perch just to give a different texture and hopefully keep their claws and beak in shape.

I want my finches to fly between the perches not hop from one to the next.

Without repeating what Liz said, I believe it is very important to allow finches to exercise, if you have too many perches there is enough room to roost but too little room to fly and exercise. Two perches at opposite ends of the cage about 4" from the end and one or two other perches close to the food or water is more than enough in that size cage.

So removing the excess perches is for their own good as a fat bird is an unhealthy bird

it is much better for the birds if they have to actually fly between the perches. as willie said a fat bird is unhealthy
