My Hubby mentioned that there are in fact dimmable fluorescent lights but the dimmer switch is more expensive but the cost savings using fluorescent lighting would make up for the extra expense in the long run. So that is good to know if I decide to go with that option. I also like the idea of having two sets of lights and two different switches for more light control.
I didn't know that! Thanks for the information. I guess it's a big advantage when you have the electricians in the family. :D

Dean, why is that? I have fluorescent light fixtures laying right on top of my breeding cages, so the light is definitely closer than 2 feet. Every single cage has a light either on top of the cage or on the back side. I've been doing this for five years and never had a problem with it. I've used everything from common daylight tubes to specialty tubes with 6700k and 98cri. I do use the black fluorescent tubes to produce more hens, and that works. An NFSS judge gave me that tip, when I was getting too many males.

Deborah, I was recently talking with another breeder about these dimable swithches... I have seen them available for fish tanks but not for general installation on household switches... Could you furnish me a brand name or source as to where to buy these? thanks and thank your husband for the info :D

I am so happy for you and your birds... may I make one more suggestion?
Have a nice recording machine installed so you can tape the songs of your birds... then lay down some harp music over that :D I will be the first to buy your recordings... I will even sell them in my store :)
Just think... it will help buy finch food... and more birds

Candace & Lou......about the dimmable fluorescent switches....there is good news and bad news. My statement about dimmable light switches for fluorescent bulbs was a true statement but a bit oversimplified. Here is what I have found out.......

Hubby told me they had dimmable fluorescent lights in the power plant he worked in so that is why he knew about them. Yes...you could retrofit your lights but it would be extremely costly to do so. You would have to buy a dimmable ballast for each fluorescent light fixture (ballast would take care of 2 bulbs) which would cost about $50.00 to $100.00 dollars. Then you would have to redo your light switch because you would need a couple more wires hardwired in to make the new switch work with the dimmable fluroescent light (another $50.00 or more)....unless you put in a wireless remote switch system which would not need the extra wiring and might cost a little less.

If you were building a new structure and planned for the dimmable fluorescent lights the cost would be much less. Retrofitting would most likely be too costly for your current setup unless you have an electrician in your family to run the new wiring.

There are dimmable Compact Fluorescent bulbs out there that you can buy that would not need a switch to be rewired IF you already are using a dimmer switch with an incandescent bulb.

Here is a link to the Lutron website which has dimmer switches and dimmable ballasts. But you would need to know what your fluorescent lights specs are.

http://www.lutron.com/

You could also do a Google search for "dimmable fluorescent lighting" or "fluorescent dimmer switches".

Candace.....if you are serious about finding out.....you could go to a commercial lighting store and they can assess your needs and tell you just what it would cost and need an electrician to make the changes. But I am guessing the $$$$$$$$ will scare you away.

Whew!....all this information gathering is too much for my brain.....time to just sit and watch the birds and play some harp music. #-o

Thanks for your time and information.. thank Hubby too. I am not going to redo what I have..especially since I am on a budget these days... but you know there just may be a future bird house with outdoor flight in the future  I would say that it would be best to do in consideration of new construction. Thanks again for the info :D

Hello, Sally....
You can do what ever makes you comfortable that was my advice of not installing the light closer than 2 feet, you do not have to have any problem with your birds when you keep the light on top of their cages or behind it, to me there is things just makes common since.....

Allow me to ask you this Question and i really do not mean any harm by asking you :

Tell me how will you feel if there is a light on top of your head and close by your face at least 12 hours a day ?
Is that sound good to you and will you be happy with that situation ?

Why do not we all as a humans compare things on our selves before we use it on our birds ?

It does not matter how many years you have been doing that with out any problems caused to your birds, what matter is,...I believe if your birds can talk they will ask you this.......
Would you please move this damn light a way from our faces ? [-o< .

How about we ask God to provide each one of us with Sun that will be installed on top of each person heads !!! Can you imagine !!!! ?

And by the way the judge that told you to use the black light to allow your birds produce females more than male was correct, even though i did not have to ask any one to figured it out and i do not mind to ask people who are more experienced than me with canaries, i still learn about them every day .

You asked me why so forgive me.. that was my answer :)

Good luck .
