Couple of Quick Tidbits

Post by managermania » Mon May 21, 2012 7:15 pm

I am in the process of building all of my really large flights in my new basement bird room. Well...they are large to me.

One thing very interesting was that I had most all of my finches in nothing smaller than an 48" (l) x 18" (w) x 18" (h) flight. When I put them in the new flights, a few are having a hard time flying to the top or long distances. The smallest new flight is 6' x 4' x 6' (h). A couple are just sitting on the bottom. I guess they will just need some time to get stronger.

Also, one of my Goldbreast was preening one of my Diamond Firetails. My smallest and largest. This pairing is being watched very closely. Also, there are tons of perches and greenery for seclusion in this flight.

Oooo, congrats on finishing the new flights! =D>

I bet that it's the height that's harder for them, that requires different muscles from distance. but it is surprising that distance is tough on them too - I wouldn't have thought two extra feet could make so much difference!

And post some pics already!!
4 zebras Crystal, Beau, Bella and Dmitri (the little squeaker), 2 societies Diva and DJ (and their 6 adult kids), and 2 green singers Thor and Regina

I also found this to be common when i would buy birds that came from smaller cages. They dont seem to take too long to start zipping around.
best of luck, what lucky birds.

Going to move this to Housing, since others might be interested in how they could use basement room for aviaries.

When i moved my babies to the flight cage I had to put small perches like steps going up to the top until they became better flyers. Once in awhile i still hear a thump, as the littlest one falls of a perch and forgets he can fly.
