Protection from the elements?

Post by Sasha2 » Thu Jun 14, 2012 3:05 pm

Will a roof and three walls be enough East/North/west but not on the south, thats open? Should I put in some type of small windbreak for the South side, the rain cant reach them if they huddle in that far corner but some small amount of breeze may?
Do they actually need an indoor enclosure area like boxes?

If none allows it, I'd go for building about 50cm to a meter fully covered with a gap so they can fly in, this means you don't have to worry too much about the elements, although putting some barriers would prove themselves worthy ;)

Hi Sasha, some people build boxes to attach to flights, so the can enter this enclosed box (like an indoor section of the flight) and this is usually a good place to keep nests nice and warm. What you can do is do plexi-glass (which is usually cheap) on a side or two, so you can see the birds from different angles, and it stops the elements. Keep us posted!

Hmmm..Its only 7ft long, 4ft has a back wall with a roof, 3ft is open caging. Its built inside my covered porch on the East end.I did put a 1ft wall on the side facing us to make a covered area on the west side.My son took my camera so I will get pics when I get it back(hopefully soon). They will be coming in during winter.
The plexi glass is a good idea. But I dont want to have to rebuild.Im tired, its been a chore building this thing..Next time Im just buying something.

We had a big storm last night and the aviary was completely dry so Im not worried about rain.Im just not sure how much wind got in.I betting on not much.

Thanks, I did add an extra piece of wood that hangs down as a wind block on the covered end, hopefully that will be enough.

Im not sure how to put the birds in it now. They've been inside.Ive got the one pair with the baby I cant move yet.But I can move one pair of zebs and the new pair of diamond doves in it now.
